Impact Aileron Screech Fixed!

After trying everything that everyone else had tried I decided to borrow a page from the glider folks. I ordered a 10 foot roll of Gapseal from NE Sailplane. It's a one inch wide piece of stiff mylar with adhesive on about 1/2 " of the width. You make sure that it overlaps the aileron when the aileron is fully in the up position and stick it down. That's it! I put it on Friday night and flew 4 rounds at the Fox Valley Aero Club pattern meet yesterday without any noise at all!!! It did make the ailerons slightly more efficient but I had taken out 10 percent of down aileron and the difference in roll was virtually unnoticeable.

I didn't get to fly it today. The tail broke off right at the rear bulkhead on my last flight. The pull pull cables and the tape on the inside of the fuse at the top and bottom seams were the only thing holding the tail on, but that is another story.

I can attest to the fact that Bill never abused this plane and did not put any extreme or even average stress on this plane. He was trying to baby this plane since it was the replacement for his Rev Pro which had the tail FALL OFF on like the 2nd flight. Attched are the pics that I took at the contest showing the break as well as the reinforcement mods that were made to prevent this from happening. Nice product huh?

Bummer Bill.....1st clue should have been the 1st plane, 2nd clue...the damn name of it's replacement.....this puts you back to square #1.

I have had more than one theory about these fusealges breaking, Mine are braced with the specified tail area fuse former and cross braced with balsa or compsoite material all of the way to that former.

Did that make mine immune? Probably not.

I think that the rudder and stab and much heavier that what we are used to. And all of that mass back there flicks around with fatiguing results. The "neck" or narrowest part is vulnerable to excess weight forces behind it.

My Impacts have 1.5 oz rudders and no servos in the stabs. The stabs themselves could be a lot lighter as well.

Just a "Theory".

Eric.
