Goldberg Obsession

I think I know the answer to this but would one be able to fly pattern with an Obsession powered by a YS 1.10?
Thanks!

You could fly the Sportsman class with the Obsession, but for any other class, it is too long. The plane is a 140 size, around 12 lbs., so the YS 110 would be marginal in the upper classes, anyway.

Ken,
What about the Ultra RC Quest or the Hangar 9 Showtime?

The Showtime is a better all around plane than the Quest. I am flying a Showtime now and had a Quest a year ago.
I flew my Quest with an OS 120, it flew good, but would be awesome with the YS 110.
I fly my Showtime with a Saito 150, but have seen one fly with the YS 110, and it flies very sweet, indeed.

Either of these planes will fly precise with the rates turned down, but the Showtime is a much better 3D machine on high rates.

My opinion, get the Showtime.

My .02.

Thanks Ken but I'm not interested in 3d...I'm too old and slow.
I would like to try to ease back in to pattern and only want to consider the pattern capabilities of these two planes.
Thanks!

I would say, using Pattern only as your interest, I would still go with the Showtime. You will be flying it without the SFG's, for precision flying, so you could send those to me, for a spare set:D

I flew the Quest two years ago and the beginning of last year. I planned on using that plane for Pattern until it met with an early demise, not the planes fault.

I bought an Excelleron 90 to replace it but picked up a used LA-2 to replace it after another early demise. I took the LA-2 to first place in our district in Sportsman. When I purchased my Showtime, my plan was to use it in my move to Intermediate, but my wife bought me a beautiful used El Nino pattern plane for my move. I will no longer be able to use the plane as an excuse.

Either plane, the Quest or the Showtime, would be a very good choice.

Good luck,

Ken

Technically the Obsession is not legal for any class of pattern. It is too big and too heavy. That being said, I don't know of any Contest Director that would not let you fly it in Sportsman class and maybe higher. Ideally, the CD would list in the contest sanction that they will allow non-conforming planes in Sportsman class. Since a competitor "could" challenge (protest) the plane and make the CD disquality the plane if the deviation from the 2-meter and 11lb limits are not advertised prior to the event. If you want to fly in a contest, just call the CD ahead of time and ask if it will be ok. The contest that I am running specifically lists in the sanction that ANY AMA legal plane will be allowed in Sportsman. So, go and have fun although there are better choices than the Obsession. Remember that lighter flies better and that the 12lbs + on the Obsession will be a liability.

RE: Goldberg Obsession

I have flown the Obsession and the showtime. The Obsession would be VERY under powered with a YS 110. I think a YS 1.40 sport would even marginal for true pattern flying. The Showtime is a GREAT flying plane. I have flown it through the FAI pattern pretty easily. The YS 110 would fly it, but personally if you havent purchased the motor I would go with something a little larger. Believe it or not, and I'm sure Ken would agree, the OS 1.60 is PERFECT with that plane. Just keep the rates low and it is a great airplane for Sportsman, Intermediate, and even Advanced. it will fly OK with the YS 110 though. I would definitely go with the Showtime over the Quest. Much better built airplane. The Showtime has a very well built fuse. The Qwest along with a lot of the other ARFS like that do not handle even one hard landing without ripping the gear out.

Hope this helps,

Arch

I've got an OS .91 FX with a pipe on my Showtime and is more than enough power to take it through any of the AMA patterns. Saves a lot of weight over an OS 1.60
