Q: Does the cowl butt up against the firewall or does it slip over the fuselage a bit?

It goes over the firewall to that second bulkhead. It's a tight fit and you may have to trim both the firewall and bulkhead (I did) but it fits.

Installing CF landing gear in place of the mickey mouse carbon tubes. Any idea on the covering trim colors?

i think it is an Ultracote color but not sure which one. You have the red one?

yup..mostly.red with white and blue lower trim.

I don't see anything on the DVD supplied with the plane showing suggested C/G point. Anyone have a suggested starting point?...TIA

Apparently you are supposed to move the wing tube around until you like the CG. Pretty strange at least to me. After reading through all of the threads I put the tube about 1/8" aft of the most forward position it can go and glued it there. That's about where Eric Henderson put it and he was happy with it. With everything else located as shown and with the battery forward It should balance well enough to fly safely. Then it is just a function of trimming it and moving the battery around until it flies like you want it. If I ever get an engine that runs I will test this theory by actually flying the thing.

Hey gang, how heavy is this thing? Sez 9 - 10 1/2 lbs and that's quite a range so where are these coming in RTF? Not E-power, just plain ol' glow or petrol

Mine is just a hair over 10 lbs. with a YS 1.40.

Nope. Still installed incorrectly at least in the one I purchased back in January. I put new shear web in without much trouble.

308...did you maiden yours yet?...I have maybe 10 flights on mine now. Very uneventful maiden.

Not yet. It's completed but then I found out the YS140 I bought for it was basically a paperweight (and I bought two of them!!) so they are in Nevada being brought back to life. Have you noticed any wing tube problems? Someone on I think RCG claimed his failed after about 4 flights. I'd not heard about this anywhere else. How are you liking yours so far?

Big G have you put many more flights on your Evolution? I'm curious about how the wing tube and wings are holding up. With any luck I'll have mine going in a couple of weeks. Still waiting on the motor.

I have about 30 flights on it so far. No problems with the wing tube. I am flying the Intermediate schedule, which is easy on the airframe (no snaps). I have pulled thru some high G loops, inside and outside...no problems. I think after the shear webs are fixed, you will be fine. As a side note, The Hobbyking F3A motor is doing fine, and after a complete Intermediate routine I have approximately 25 to 30% left in the LiPos..(5,000 ma).

Today after about 60 flights the Evolution was destroyed by wing failure. This was after pulling modestly out of the last leg of a square loop on corner. I had added the correct shear webs as recommended. The carbon tube was split but not broken, probably due to ground impact. My gut feeling was correct: the carbon tube is too short, shorter than the one in my much smaller Airoso. I cannot recommend this plane, at any cost.

Sorry to hear about your loss of this plane. Still haven't flown mine, I was planning to take it out next weekend. Now I'm not so sure. Was the tube itself too short for the wing? Is there room in the wing for a longer tube or would I need to make major mods to it before a longer tube would help? I have a brand new Phase One that I need an engine for. It's painted and ready for radio and hinging. A couple of weeks work would have it ready to go. Wondering now if I should just pull everything out of the Evolution and go with the P1. I'd hate to stuff a freshly built YS because of what is becoming a know failure point on this airframe. This would be the second competition ARF airframe this year for me that is basically not airworthy from the beginning. I'm getting tired of wasting the money and time. I know where there is an Angels Shadow available that has enough flights on it that I'd be comfortable with it. Another $800 or so though. Damn....

In hindsight, a 10 inch or so longer wing tube would not have been that much harder to install at the time of shear web install. That would, imo, have helped a lot.

Oh no! Sorry for the loss, bigG. I hope you were able to salvage your motor/equipment. Sorry to hear this. I finished the shear web mod yesterday on mine, but haven't recovered the bottom of the wings yet. When I inspected the structure the other day, I remembered that you posted that the carbon tube looks to be too short. A lot of the problem looks to be that there isn't much carry-through structure from the tube socket to the rest of the wing. This causes a highly stressed area just past the tube socket, with only an upper and lower 1/4" balsa spar to handle the load for the most part (albeit with two layers of shear webs after the mod). I also noticed that the vertical balsa sheet piece (actually two pieces) that's above and below the tube socket is split past the tube. The factory didn't bother gluing this piece (at least) or adding a doubler piece. I added some vertical grain 3/32" balsa in this area.
Well, after hearing of yours, I'm going to take another look and come up with some structure to help better transfer the wing loads from the end of the carbon spar and socket. It does look too short, but then again my friend's Comp ARF Integral carbon tube spar looks really short to me too. That's why I'm leaning towards the above thoughts... |
