Monokote issues? Couldn't be.... We have been assured by the Monokote Makers they have not changed anything that would affect the way it shrinks, sticks, color, etc. Yeah, right!!!

I just monokoted the wings/stab on my Brio, ended up tearing the Monokote off, used UltraCoat as a base white and barely convinced Monokote to stick on the surfaces for the color. I needed to use Monokote because my paint matched Monokote colors. Not next time, the paint will match Ultracoat colors.

I can't believe the drastic change in the way Monokote works (or doesn't) now.

Oh, sorry, we were discussing Evolutions, sorry, I got carried away ;-)

LMAO

As you know of my many projects this year Don, I've been quite unhappy with monokote. LOL
When I built the E patriot I used Ultracote white, which went on like a dream, and then hand selected the other 4 colors by opening each one at the cash register. Did I ever show you the good vs bad deep red at IONE or BARCS? Whatever the contest?
I feel for ya.
So when's the paint going on? Should only take a day to paint and clear the fuse, right?
What are you going to do when you fly it with color on? Probably be strange, lol.

Hope all is well!

Chris, Got news for you buddy!! The paint is on, and the Brio (aka Miss Piggy actually looks presentable. It looks better in the air than in the pits tho. It is a PUDGY fuselage!!! Kinda like it's pilot-----

Unfortunately, the sad truth is that there are not many options for those looking for competitive pattern planes right now. At least for those of us who don't want to build a basic kit nor spend $3000 for a top notch ARF. The "value priced" buyer has to live with the less than perfect stuff or do what? There are no options. Send it back, yes that would be justified and now you have nothing at all.
Sorry for the slow response, been away for the weekend...

I think that what was running through my mind was that Chris had spent so much time fixing things on his Evolution that he could have been a good ways down the road towards building a new Black Magic or Insight from plans. I hadn't consciously realized that bit, just that he was spending a LOT of time fixing issues on a supposedly pre-built plane, but I think that was where my thoughts were going. I like building myself, so the scratch built ones look better to me than ARF's, but not everyone likes to build, is capable or can find the time. Which leaves you with a problem.

As Chris said, much of this doesn't become apparent until you are elbow deep in it, then you are somewhat committed at that point. B*tch of a problem to run into, no matter what you are working on... I've been there a few times in the garage, too.:)

From what I have seen, the only decent practical ARF option is a Showtime with the throws dialed WAY down to pattern type rates. Not perfect and not a 2M, but they are available (which is an insurmountable advantage), quality seems decent (Dick Hanson says it's the best ARF he's seen, which is high praise) and they fly pretty well. If you need to step up to the big leagues, then you get to pay dearly for the priveledge of having someone else build your plane for you.

I'll agree with you about the showtime Mark. I've seen several. Maybe Scott will join in with a comment. He has one powered by an axi 5320 and he says the plane requires very little mixing and fly's really good. Which, if you know scott is saying alot.
The Showtime was what I was gonna buy for a fun plane. Now I think I'll go with the fliton inspire at some point.

As for rebuilding this Evolution. Yeah, I never realized it was going to take so much work. I would have sent them back other wise.
I have built three 2m pattern ships this year and wasn't wanting to build another. The Evolution came along at the right time for me. It doesn't take that long to build so I guess things came up really fast in the build process.

I will try calling them again today!!

I understand that you were looking for a simple, quick alternative to having to build ANOTHER plane this year, but it sure went horribly wrong. My sympathies on that one, I have been in the same position of wanting a quick fix and finding out that the short cut took much longer than the supposed "long way". Sucks, too.

Good luck with the calls, they seem to be steadfastly refusing to acknowledge the issues and/or help correct them.

RE: Ultra Rc Evolution

I don't usually view this thread as Chris has informed me of his 'take' on this plane, but I will give you a few thoughts on the ShowTime. Quality - really pretty good for $185 - what I paid for this kit at a local hobby shop - California-hobbies.com. I'm using Flight Power 3700 batteries which puts the plane just at 10.5lb with the AXI 5320. I flew the plane at the recommended CG to start, way to tail heavy for pattern. I have now moved the CG about 1.5" forward, just finished this change last night, and have not flown it yet like this, but what I did not like is the yaw I see in the plane in wind. I'm hoping the more forward CG helps this. As far as mix goes, mine does require the least amount of mixing I have ever had in a plane. I'm not sure all the S/T's are like this, but I think with the new CG, I will have no rudder to elevator trim for KE. I will be shocked if true, but only had 1-2% before this change, and it was in up elevator. My rudder required twisting a bit to straighten out, as did one elevator half, but it's pretty good now. I'm not sure the 'moments' of the plane will allow for great pattern lines to be drawn, but I'm not making any conclusion on this yet. The plane floats at 900 sq in at 10.5lb, and I'm sure if flys great with gas, being lighter. I have also recently just reduced the mechanical throws of the surfaces, and have not had enough flight time to really check this out yet, but much better than the 3D set up I had before.

I do add extra epoxy everywhere there is a joint, and I tend to use heavy electrons, which last longer. Maybe it was 9.5lb?

Update.
Well Bryan called me yesterday. I have to say, the guy is real nice. And willing to make this plane right. He just needs the feedback as to problems. I understand that this is a pretty new plane and will have issues at first. So I will work with him on it and they will end up right in the long run. Well, as right as a 2m pattern ship can be for the price.
He is a busy person and I understand now some of the delays in getting ahold of him.
As for him answering in the forum or email, I also understand now that he would rather call you in person so that nothing gets misunderstood. So, any issue's with this plane or any of his other products, I would call and leave a message. The guy will call you back when he's back in the US. As stated before he is very busy. So even if you leave a few messages, he'll call. I'm pretty sure of it.

Can't wait till I get some parts so I can fly it!!!

Has anyone, finished and flown the Ultra- RC Evolution yet, If so what
do they think. An also has anyone mounted fix type Bolly gear to the plane

RE: Ultra Rc Evolution

All I have to do is mount my batteries in the electric one. But my wings are so bad I'm not bothering to finish.
I did send a few pics to bryan yesterday, but was unable to send video as I got a new computer and it doesn't have the appropriate firewire adapter for the video camera. I'll have to put one in on sunday as its my day off.
Honestly though, with the problems fixed I do think this plane will be pretty good.
I'm with you on the gear though, I think I will remove this gear and install some bolly. This gear (and the wheel pants) looks horrible.
I like how tall it sits though.

RE: Ultra Rc Evolution

A buddy of mine just finished one up and brought it to our contest this evening for practice. He put the first two flights on it today and boy, was I impressed. There are some very cool engineering features on the airplane, not to mention the fact that it looks like it's built very well. He seemed to like it, I thought it was quite nice. We'll see how it stacks up as he gets more time on it, but from what I saw today it looked very nice. OS 1.40 for power, seemed to do a more than adequate job of tugging it around.

My Evolution came out the box today. The airplane comes is a plain box with a modest label. I was eager to see what was inside and compare it with both the Giles 202 that I had reviewed and with the notes I had been reading.

The contents are well packed and each main piece comes with its own “silver” bag which doubles as your personal plane transport covers and shipping support.

In the case of the Giles 202 I took a capable 3-D plane and put it through a process to make it into a capable pattern plane. I don’t intend to do the reverse with the Evolution but it is tempting to get some extra wings and stabs and make a 3-D set up as well.

Much of the construction clearly comes from the laser-cut fashion of the Ultra-R/C Giles 202 and friends. This open frame "jig-saw" structure either appeals to you or not, as the case may be. The advantage is lightness. Experienced pattern pilots are very familiar with the lengths that they will go to remove weight.
If you are new to pattern-construction-fanaticism or the current 3-D lightness extremes, you might find the Evolution a bit hard to get used to. The airplane construction does assume that you know what you are doing and that you can land reasonably gently. This is what is expected if you if you buy an $800-1500 pattern ARF or ARC. If you bought an Evoltion you coud by a spare or two an still gave some change

The stab is plug-on and the work is already done for you. I checked my alignment and incidences and found them to be just about right. The stab is pulled against the fuselage sides by two 3-mm bolts on each root.

The plywood tabs are not that aesthetically pleasing, but as many have found out that system does work and it is easy to fit and remove the stabs. I was pleased to find out that the servo tray in each stab now readily accepts the JR 8411 servo with no carving required.

The wing is of built up construction and uses the same attachment system as the Giles 202. It is billed as a way to move the wing around and thus set the CG without adding lead.

As a pattern-pundit I would suggest that you choose the moment-arm that you need and stick with it. I glue my tube in place with the ply doughnuts provided. I will probably mount the wing with adjusters and a 4-40 screw at each end of the wing tubes. [Just like the review Giles]. Based upon how close the Giles 202 came out I will begin with the epoxy-board tabs first and use them as simple anti-rotation pins. If I need adjusters I will retrofit them.

The cowl will take a YS and OS rear exhaust but I shall use my trusty OS 1.60’s. In fact I have all of the “gear” that came out of eth Giles 202 and will just drop it all into the Evolution. The header will be changed for a Temptation-Karl-Mueller header to allow me to put the 1.60 FX inverted.

The engine will be supported by a Hyde C mount. The airplane comes with a plywood template for the various motors. It gives you a very good start for the center of the Hydemount etc.

Regards,

Eric.

Eric.

If I could ask you to eyeball down the aileron cutout to see if your wings were also built on a banana, lol, table I would appreciate it.
I'm curious if the new wings are turning out better than the ones I have. I have lots of questions for you but will keep it to this and hopefully you will share your thoughts as you build.

Also, could you tell me more about the giles. I may send back my evolutions and opt for the giles if they are straight.

On another note to all,
I did manage to get the video of my issues to Ultra-Rc. I hope to hear back from them soon. I'm sure I will.

The Fuselage is probably the most interesting area to look at. It is light and it is very strong in the flex and twist department. I liked the canopy being pre-rigged to take a quick release, simple but effective, wire latch.

There is a good supply of hardware that will do the job, as was proven on other models. Of course the temptation to fit ball bearing horn and clevises is still your option!

I have included a few pictures of the “woodwork”

I did notice that I would have to be careful about cutting into the covering when routing the elevator servo wires. It would be easy to cut away too much covering. It would be a good idea to fit the stabs and mark the sides to see how much is covered by the stab before you do the cutting.

I did take a good look at the U/C system. It is designed to avoid the pipe tunnel so alternative undercarriage has to be carefully planned. My experience is that with normal
landing-treatment the system will work just fine. Prang it in a bit and get the legs side loaded and you can snap them. Neither you nor I can control these wind conditions. The option that was suggested in either this thread or the Giles thread, to slide solid CF rod inside the hollow legs is attractive and may well be what I do.

My original legs are still working in the hands of a sport pilot at my local field. I did run thin CA inside those legs which I believe makes quite a difference.

Must run and finish writing a couple of ARF reviews. I’ll be back with more on the Evolution as I get my bench cleared and make some progress. One thing that I will do straight away is fit the ailerons and elevators. I will use CA hinges as is my pattern practice, to keep the air gaps down to a minimum.

Later,

Eric.
