New Pattern engine gasoline

ZDZ/ RC showcase has this new unit on there website.

Sounds like a great thing altough the vibration is probably a concern.
This engine and a $400+ hyde mount puts it close to the electric's.
It will be interesting to see the test's.

I did send ZDZ a mail and asked about ZDZ 40 RE-L (lightweight). RC Showcase did have 40 RE-L on there website before, now they have renamed it to 40 RE F3A. ZDZ did not give any answer on my mail.

Hi,
FWIW, I also sent RC Showcase two emails inquiring about the ZDZ 40RE F3A and didn't get any response?
I guess they're not too interested in responding to customers.

Funny I get responses to their e-mails... I also am their webmaster and just checked the new site that the e-mail was correct... it appears so...

The F3A version is coming soon... the 40RE is still available as well.

The F3A has been lightened it up and features the rear exhaust for those wanting to install a tuned pipe.

It will be interesting to see if they add the NG features for even more power.

Another great application for this engine are many 78"-80" aircraft out there. Even the Giant UcanDO or new Seagull Bling 3D could benefit... there is an inverted pitts muffler that stacks stright from behind the engine for narrow cowls and lightest weight setup. Along with the rear carb makes for a thin install...

Or you could select an ESComposites CF pipe...

Looking forward to this one...

Wonder if and when this engine will be out?
You know anything Maudib?

Maudib 01-06-2007 06:57 PM

RE: New Pattern engine gasoline

Sure wish I did...

I do knwo that the prototype engines were in the hands of pilots (overseas) and that feedback required some mods which is what has slowed down release...

As soon as I hear anything from RC Showcase... I'll make sure to post here...

Click the link above, progress is taking place. Specs and price are listed.

Who's the guinea pig?

Wonder how much Mr. Hyde will charge for a soft mount for this?

RE: New Pattern engine gasoline

Yep I just uplaoded the info...

forgot about this thread... SORRY! :)

The engines are on their way... they dropped a full 1/2 lb off the 40RE and are now the lightest 40 on the market (best I can tell)

They are not cheap... but then again... it offers a lot of features for the premium dollar... including the 2 cell lipo friendly ignition...

RE: New Pattern engine gasoline

the total weight of engine, ignition and ign. battery probably will be around: 2.4lb + 3oz + 3oz = 2.775 lb (1260 grams). YS160DZ weights 2.05 lb (930 grams). The difference is 11oz (330 grams). Thi extra weight probably can be partially offset by using a smaller tanks, to satisfy the pattern airplane weight limit.

Surely, it can be a killer to the YS.

Maudib 02-19-2007 10:09 PM

RE: New Pattern engine gasoline

Don't forget the YS needs mounting rails (or a fancy anti-vibration mount) the ZDZ will need some light standoffs... maybe...

Smaller tanks and less fuel on takeoff...

I doubt it.

Different, and cool to be sure, but not a YS. But then, I'm biased :D

Probably have to run a tuned pipe or a canister to control the noise.

This looks like a great opportunity for Dick Hanson. :D I really would like to see him review this engine. I have flown the ZDZ 40 RE on a giant u-can-do, and it is crazy power. When windy it almost wont slow down enough to land.

Maudib 02-19-2007 10:52 PM

RE: New Pattern engine gasoline

Like he ISN'T going to get the first one? ;)

Yep... he'll have the ESComposites CF pipe on this one within 2 hours of it arriving... ;)

I hear they are super quiet....

It still sounds a little heavy. Web site says 2.4 lbs bare no plug what is it all up with ignition and plug. Is there a header for it yet?

Maudib 02-19-2007 11:19 PM

RE: New Pattern engine gasoline

Nothing wrong with sticking to what you like and have had good success with... but that engine with rails weigh the same as the 40F3A with standoffs...

I saw a post somewhere on RCU Dick Hanson was going to be getting a look at on of these.

RE: New Pattern engine gasoline

2.4 bare WITH plug...

The 40RE is 2.9 bare WITH plug so it's about 8 oz lighter...

It is the LIGHTEST 40cc engine available and is lighter than most 25cc gassers...

It is heavier than glow options until you take into account fuel tank size and qty of fuel... 20 oz on the 1.60ci vs 10-12 on the 40cc...

8 to 10 oz more on takeoff will likely make the 1.60 heavier...

SO it's a rub...

Hey David after struggling to get my Electric Impact under the 11lb limit with the 40oz. Lipo's that we must run these numbers seem like a piece of cake! I'm really looking forward to seeing this new engine. It's great that we have so many options. Electric with outrunners and inrunners. OS 140's and 160's, YS DZ's and now light weight and powerful gas engines. It sure makes things more interesting. Right now I'm most fired up with my E. plane but I still have the YS option available if I change my mind. Mike Mueller

Absolutely... I love it all too... and the E-Stuff is REALLY coming on strong...

Electric, gas, glow... there's facets to this hobby in every direction... some like one more than the other, etc... but I enjoy learning about it all... it's just plain fun and interesting...

We are going to fly the new 40 in an all glass model - which has been flying with the standard ZDZ40 RE-
power is sorta unreal with that engine at 10.75 lbs.
Now a new pipe setup and different props will be included . One is 22.25x12 made by ZM (called 23x12)
(also using DX7 radio no mixen n switchen-just a load of expo)
I flew another ZDZ40 RE with the new pipe (Ed's) and 22x8 Mejzlic on my Bling -just to see - the engine easily ran in high 6000 rpm with smooth transition. at 14 lbs the 1450 sq in Bling was a VTO setup.
I swapped out the 40 -and redid the Bling for a 50ZDZNG and pipe running 22x10 - now the model is extremely quiet on 22x10 prop and still instant power. piped loooong for low rpm smoothness
This trick really seems to work - max power is down a bit - but so what -
Now --we are getting faster acceleration at lower rpm
More like an electric . here is the Bling - Homely as a mud fence but a great test bed
all balsa cowl now and a intake muffler makes it really quiet.

Don't sweat the weight I just finished a ABBRA with a ZDZ40 RE with a ES pipe ready to fly weight is 10lbs 12oz can't wait for the SNOW to go.

cygnet, could you post pics of your abbra? also, dick if you have access to a sound meter can you take some readings of the engine running per ama/fai requirement? i am really interested in this combo for my next aircraft (actually 3 aircraft). a big thanks, toby silhavy....
