RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
The elevator is very sensitive. To get it to fly more smoothly I have to use 80% expo. I got 3 fairly short flights yesterday. The first was kinda hairy. Needed about 10 clicks up elevator trim, and I couldn't seem to get the ailerons to trim. Second flight went well. Checked for balance, decided it needed a little weight on the right wingtip. I was delighted to find that it would actualy knife edge. This is something that the 480 electrics I had been flying lately would not do. Also decided to turn up the aileron rate 'cause the roll was too slow. On the third flight I tried a pull to vertical with a full roll up and the roll took up almost 300 feet. Landed and found that the threads has stripped on an aileron clevis. I hope to get in a full morning of practice next Saturday. After that it is just a couple more weeks to Riverside.

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
what engine did you put into yours? I find it amazing how some folks need weight in the nose and others in the tail.
My Super Tiger G2300 weighs in at 38oz w/muffler. Interestingly when I was checking balance last weekend and wrestling with what to do I tried a CG check with the muffler off, which is 6 oz off the nose and I was still nose heavy. that's why my battery wound up in the tail. |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
ys.110 - stock muffler. I've heard of people using the 2300 before, but it seems like it may be a bit much for a 90 sized plane.

I'm also using a YS 110 with stock muffler. I made the mistake of ordering the Tru Turn spinner with a lightweight backplate ( figures, huh?) The tank is as close to the CG as I could get it.
Hmm, it seems to me that there aren't enough pictures in this thread so I'll throw in a few of my finished Ex.:D |

Not exactly
Not many get the colored canopy treatment -:D Very nice touch !! It resmbles my JR Expolorer V90 FAI with a glassed blue canopy. |

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Gentlemen,
I have been using the excelleron 90 for a year and a half in pattern and doing fine. Just few comments. I used a ys110 and had problems on hot days, could not resolve the issue, so I went to an OS120AX....... it fit perfectly and gives me all I need. I run a 15-12 prop (15-10 is ok) and have all the vertical I could every need. I did have to go with taller landing gear but no big deal. It is a great combo. I cannot say enough about the OS120AX... out of the box it purrs. |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Wow I guess I don't need to post any photos!!!, unless I strip the covering and do something different, NOT.
Pride in ownership, even if they do look the same, but from those shots a question I had, may have been answerd. I noticed that you cut the center rib out of the cowling. I'm contimplating that, my carb sits directly behind that, and I'm not thinking cooling, I'm thinking turbulance to the carb. I'm going to leave it in, then check temps and see if there is an issue. My canopy has also been painted dark blue. |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Wow I guess I don't need to post any photos!!!, My canopy has also been painted dark blue. Testors Gloss Dark Blue by any chance? I removed the center rib in the cowling to get as much air in as I could. I may glue some foam blocks in to direct the airflow if cooling becomes a problem for me like it was for Walfam. |

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Rebellion,
Thanks for the pictures - it looks great! I, too, like the canopy the way you've done it. It appears you are using the stock LG and wheel pants. What wheels are you using? Did they work for the grass where you took the picture? Mine isn't complete yet, but the stock wheels seem too small for grass and I'm not sure that the wheel pants will accomodate wheels large enough to do the job. What's your experience? Alan |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Thanks for the nice words Alan.
Unfortunately the plane hasn't flown yet so my experience with it is nonexistant so far, and the pics were taken in my front yard a while back. The wheels are 2.5" H9 Pro Lites. I fly off of a paved runway most of the time and the stock ones didn't look like they would hold up too well. I've flown planes with that size wheels off grass with no problems, but again, I can't say how the Excelleron will do. Like you said, the pants are pretty tight. You might be able to get slightly larger wheels in there, but it would be tight. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Using the stock wheel pant, you can only go up about one size on the wheel, I used the largest wheel I could cram in to the pant, which also required modifying the axels on a grinder. to use anything larger would mean no pant or a aftermarket pant. I just refer a larger wheel and I like the light weight foam, my plane just seems to stick to the ground on touch down. Our runway is pavement.

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Speaking of the stock wheels, do the wheels supplied with the kit have a lousy bounce or what? I was going to change mine but the pants/axles have a peculiar width to them and I didn't feel like changing the whole thing.

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Well folks, I finally got a maiden flight of my Excelleron 90 today.
let me first say that Dreadnaut mentioned a sensitive elevator, he couldn;t have said it any better and I had to add a fair amount of up trimm to level the flight out. Couple clicks of right aileron and we had a smooth flying plane. But most amazing was the Super Tigre G2300 with a stock muffler, HOLLY CRAP! A vertical missle has been unleashed here. I had to throlttle back to about 1/3 for a decent level flight speed. Incredible power and smooth. I did a bench break in with it, about a gallon of fuel, then after mounting it up in the plane inverted, spent a fair amount of time tuning on the ground at home before the maiden. That really paid off, as it was a 123 go fly routine at the field. Unfortunetly, I have had some medical issues with the wife and only got the one flight in, short one at that, before I had to run home. I am really looking foraward to getting some more test flights in and checking this out. More to follow as soon as I can get back out. Mike R |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Congratulations, Mike! Mine should be done in about a week...:)

RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Thanks, your gonna like it,
I'm chompin' at the bit here to get back with it, but the family medical issues come first. Mike R |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Congratulations on a successful maiden Mike. Have you considered removing the counterbalances on the elevator? Pretty easy to do, even after it's built.
Best wishes to the family. Dave |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
hi
any more news about this new plane called the Remedy? |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
the remedy 120 and nope, I talked to the Product manager at the RCx show here in California about a month ago, he said it was going into production, So that means it will still be a couple months before it somes over to the states, I don't know about you country.
Not that I have given up on it, but frankly this plane has a had a lot of delays and considering they flew a prototype last april, seems a long road. It has been said that the delays were due to refinements in the design. considering Mike hester is offering the Black Magic V3 at $400.00 I'm considering that now. But keeping my eye out on the remedy. MIke R ORIGINAL: mikedsilva hi any more news about this new plane called the Remedy? |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Well I got some more flights in on the 90 today, has been a little bit of a chore getting the Super Tiger G2300 running correctly. So far I have had to spend a little more time on dialing in the low speed mixture to get a better transition. Normal flying speed is 1/3 stick. Also having a problem with inverted flight and inverted pull ups, going lean and flaming out.
I changed to the Uniflow system today and that made it a lot better but still seeing some leaning when pulling up inverted. Next will be to tweak the spray bar a bit, they say that rotating the bar will change the transition characteristics. But that will have to wait a bit, as I knocked the landing gear off today, Nope not a bad landing, I was already down and rolling and hit the edge of our runway which has grass edging about 1 1/2 inches tall. Just snapped that plate right off, and I did install the additional bracing when I built it. So now that I have a clear view inside I see that adding some good ol' hard wood inside will do the trick. Off to the work shop for repairs Mike R |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
Recently I set an Excelleron .90 up for electric using a Hacker C50 10XL on 8S with an 18x12 prop. All up weight around 9 lbs. Plane sat in its box for a year because it looked like a difficult conversion, but once I got into it most bits fell into place.
The Bolly F3A uc came off on the first very gentle landing, and after repair also on the third landing. The balsa they used to brace the landing plate has the grain running the wrong way. We are now fibrglassing the fuel tank area to hold the uc plate on better. So far, not that I know much about pattern, this plane is proving fun to fly with what for me are pretty snaps. However the way mine is setup it climbs a lot under power and needs a fair bit of down stick inverted. Trying to work out whether that's a cg or downthrust issue. So the questions are: 1 How much downthrust, if any, do I need and; 2 What's a good cg, right now at about 7 " thanks david leitch |
RE: Question for Excelleron 90 owners
david
i definately had my CG back further than 7... cannot remember if it was 7.25 or 7.5... it needed just a touch of down in inverted and had absolutely no coupling in knife edge... i just converted a showtime to electric... much easier with the removeable top hatch... |
