What Servos for 2m plane?

Hi everybody

I need help deciding what servos to buy for my new 2m pattern plane (Tojeiro 140). I am not looking for the 'best-money is not an object' setup, I am just looking for something very good for this plane. I know that metal gears should not be an option, so I am thinking Hitec-Karbonite digital servos. I would like to hear suggestions about torque, speed, and even specific servo models, Hitec or not. Also, are karbonite gears a good choice for rudder-elevator where I will have one servo for each?

Thank you in advance

Serafim

P.S. I searched the Pattern forum for info on this subject and found almost nothing, which I think is very strange. Maybe on specific model threads there is some info on what someone is using, but no general questions/suggestions on servo choices. I thought that this would be one of the popular subjects.

I use only FUTABA, ailerons 9251, rudder 9351, elev dual 9650s, trot 9650.

I thied hitecs, and didn't like them, bad precision..

Take a look at this thread:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_42...tm.htm#4275896

Good discussion. Don't skimp on servos on a pattern plane. Make a huge difference.

If you stay with the coreless digital Hitecs, and set the deadband with the programmer to 1, they are ok. I've not had good experience with the Hitec cored digitals; lots of deadband.

A new servo that came out since that thread was written is the JR DS821. It features very high resolution, good speed, good torque, at a bargain basement price. If you can stand the weight and size of a standard sized servo, it is a good choice for ailerons, single elevator servos, and perhaps dual elevators. For rudder, use an DS8411SA, or a DS8611a, Hitec 5945 digital coreless (or its replacement), something with over 150 oz-in of torque.

I've settled on JR DS3421SA's for elevator, DS 9411SA's for aileron, and DS8611a's for rudder.

I'm not sponsored by anyone!

With servos, save yourself aggravation, not money.

Ailerons: JR DS9411SA
Elevator: For pushrod setup or pull-pull: JR DS8417, for dual elevator servos in stab JR DS3421sa
Rudder: JR DS8411SA

Futaba has good servos too, but I'm not familiar with those. That being said, I know many Futaba guys that fly JR servos. [8D]

For Futaba, a good overall servo is the 9151 for rud, ailerons, elevator (one servo controlled with DEPS or similar). For dual elevators, 9650 is a good one. 9154, or 9150 are the wing shape servos which work very well also.

Im with Chad
I run futaba 9151 on rudder.
I run 2 9650 on elevator halves,
I also run 9650 on ailerons.

Best that money can buy: Futaba 9650 on the throttle, two 9650s for dual elevator setups or a 9255 for a single elevator setup, a 9255 or 9351 for the rudder and 9150s or 9154s for ailerons. A very good but cheaper alternative: Futaba 3001 or 3151 on throttle, 9150s orn 9154s on ailerons and 9252s on rudder and elevators.

RE: What Servos for 2m plane?

maybe stupid idea !

Why not good old futaba :

wings : 9102
Rudder : 9402
Elevator : 1 9202 or 2 9650
Gaz : 9650 or simply 3001 if size or weight is not a problem.

It seems to me cheaper and these servos are still available!

A few years ago it was standard equipment for a 2*2 patern plane, no ?

BTW: what's the best option metal gear or not ?

Hello Flylulu

I agree with you. Every plane I have (Legend, Rhapsody, Cocaine) was equiped with S9101 on ailerons and S9201 or S9202 on elevator and rudder.
I do national program NatB in France with.

hi Serafim:D
my impact fly with three futaba9252 servos (ail, elev) one 9151(rud) and one 9650 (thr) also i suggest you if you try to use two servos in elev the better solusion is fut 9650 light weight and very strong servo, i use lot of them in my Q500 planes and i am very happy.

dapan ;)

RE: What Servos for 2m plane?

dapan, thank you also for your answer. I like your setup, have seen your plane fly, and I propably will setup my plane with Futaba servos, the only thing I haven't decided yet is if I should go with a 9252 for the elevator (single servo) or the stronger but slower 9151 is a better choise.

Laurent, I am still trying to decide. I am leaning towards Futaba servos, mainly because JR servos are practicaly not imported in Greece, so I will feel better if I know that I will be able to find replacement gears at my local hobby instead of having to order them online and wait one week for them. When I make my final choise I will let everybody know.

What about using JR 3401's for dual elevators? Good enough? I'm having trouble finding a stockist for 3421's in australia
