Recommendations?: 80 4-stroke Modern Pattern Ship
Dear List,
I'm looking a kit for the best baby brother of modern FAI 2 meter pattern ships, like the Alliance and Smaragt. It'll be powered by a Saito 80 4-stroke I already own, with stock muffler to save cost. Built-up construction preferred but not required. I'm after the smooth flying experience that I've heard so much about, but perhaps don't need as much power as some, since I'm definetely Sportman level at this stage. I'm familiar with the CA Models Widebody and the MK 3D Dancer. Are either of these appropriate? Are there better available? Your experienced opinions would be agreat help. Thanks in advance, Marc |

I have the Widebody 60 and 40, both are very nice kits. However, the 80 sized engine is a bit too small for the 60, (people are using 91FXs), and a bit too big for the 40. I would still try it with the 60 though, as you could cut out on some weight if you wanted.

If you don't mind ordering from overseas, there are a number of MK kits available in this size. I have a Silent 90 in my closet which calls out for a YS .45 or OS .91 (original Surpass) on the plans. The speciified weight is right at 6 lbs. which is right there for the Saito .80.

MK produces several kits which are about the right size for that engine:
Alliance CP, Silent .90, Wild 7 .90, Aurora .90, also a new kit of the Synergy .90 These are available from Singapore hobbies (www.singahobby.com and www.hobbynet.jp) The 3D Dancer is too big for that engine. Dick Hanson kits the Runaround/Runaway with a small (700"sq) wing which was designed for the original OS .90 surpass. If your engine has that much power then you might consider one of those. Good Luck. |
Thanks, All! Additional Posts Welcome
Thanks, everyone, for your input. I'll check out all these MKs and keep checking back for other opinions, then make a decision.
No one's mentioned CA Models' Widebody 60 at 6.7 lb. and 732 sq. in., designed by Marcello Calumbo of Brazil. Any thoughts about, or firsthand experience with, that kit? DUH! Please ignore the above paragraph. Tough day today! :o Thanks, Marc |
Synergy 90? MK or ZN? Got it! Thanks. It's MK

I aiming for my 60 to come out at around 6 and a half pounds. I see a couple of areas where weight can be chopped out.

The CA Widebody...
is an awesome kit. I have one for sale in the kit area. I wouldn't be selling it if I didn't have a Piedmont Focus on the way. I was planning on using a OS 91 or a Saito 100. The 100 would have been why over kill. Your 80 would be perect.
The kit is down right awesome. Presheeted wings and stabs, great wood, and a very easy build. I have the fuse framed up minus the turtle deck and botton sheeting. You sound like you have already looked at one, so I will not bother pointing you to a picture of it. The Widebody will be a really nice plane. Pug |

I flew it, and although I am not a pattern pilot, (yet), I found it very crisp, and neutral.

I know it's an ARF, but the Kyosho Majestic is absolutely fantastic! I have flown a H9 Aresti and it does not compare with the characteristics of the Majestic. Truly a baby pattern ship. I'll be competing in Intermediate this summer with my Majestic.

Majestic 40 vs. Alliance 46

I guess if you like the Majestic that much, MK's Alliance CP could only be better, since it weighs a half-pound less and has 10% more wing. Thanks to everyone who commented! At this point, I'm pretty settled on either the Alliance CP or the Widebody 60. Peace! Marc |
