Question about, Voltage regulator.

Hello there Everyone,

Well I have a question for you guys.
Few weeks ago I’ve bought a voltage regulator for my plane.
I’ve bought a Jaccio Perfect switch harness with a 6V regulator cause I’m going to
use a thunder Power LiPo 2S 900mAh battery for the servos/receiver. But before I’ve
plugged it in the receiver, where servos are plugged, I’ve decided to check the voltage
coming out of the regulator first, so that I could prevent (if anything is wrong with the regulator)
burning out the servos/receiver. And to my luck, I’ve read on the meter 8.3 volts. So, the
regulator isn’t working? Or, does it regulate the voltage till when it’s attached to the receiver?
Or is my regulator fried? But to my understanding of some basic electronic, when a regulator
has burn/fried, it doesn’t let any current or voltage through. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

RE: Question about, Voltage regulator.

May be some one else can chime in here also, but typically the regulator should be placed between the switch and battery. Therefor if you are testing the battery via the switch it should tell you the actual voltage of your battery, becuase it is not being regulated. It is only regulated going into the reciever. Best way to check that your regulator is working is plug the regulator into your battery and then connect regulator to a source that would give you voltage readings. Do not leave the regulator plugged into your battery because the regulator will draw down the voltage of your battery and possible destroy the battery. Hope this helps.

RE: Question about, Voltage regulator.

Danny: If you have the setup correct it should be: li-po - switch- regulator - receiver (test meter). I just checked my Jaccio setup for you and I get 6.01V at the receiver. If I check voltage at the switch, I get 8.2V from the li-po. If you get 8V after the regulator then something is wrong with it.

Danny,

You need to put a load on the regulator to see the correct voltage. Either use a battery tester with a load of plug it into the receiver and measure it on the buss. I could have selected resistors to make it regulate without an external load but that would just waste battery capacity.

RE: Question about, Voltage regulator.

What I did to check mine was test the voltage coming out of a servo connector on the receiver while the switch was on. I was worried about hooking it up when I first tested the regulator, but it worked just fine, a perfect 6.0 volts in the receiver.

RE: Question about, Voltage regulator.

Ok I'm gonna throw out a question about another brand regulator.
I purhcased one from Radio South ( and yes I will forward this question to Tony if need be. But I too am confused about the hook-up.

I got the one with the switch. so I plugged the lipo into the only male plug that it would mate to. There is a female( such as the plug at the end of your servo lead) then there is the wire to the switch and coming off the other side of the switch is another lead with another female plug. I thought that would go to the RX but then I read 8.? volts. so I plugged the lead from the regulator into the RX & I read 5.8V( 5.6vregulator, not a 6v). It apears to be working correctly , so now to my question . Is the extra lead coming off the back side of the switch just for checking the voltage of the battery, as it apprears to read the exact voltage of the lipo?

thanks for the help

Jim I would have purchased your product but I was already on the phone with Tony about a donation from LARKS(myclub) to the club in Florida that was damaged by the Tornado and it was just to convenient to ask him to send me the regulator.

RE: Question about, Voltage regulator.

Good morning everybody

Pro Pattern, if you check the following page on Troy's web site you will see that when too much power goes through a regulator then it usualy fails and gives 8.4V and not 0V:

http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/Regulators.htm

Also, there is no need to have a load on the regulator to measure the correct voltage. It makes almost no difference. You need a load to measure the voltage of the battery to know its status. Unfortunately if you measure 8.3V at the end that goes to the receiver its preaty certain that you need a new regulator.

Eddie, the extra lead is for measuring the actual battery voltage (under load) and also for charging the battery without disconnecting it. I am not familiar with the Radio South switch but I guess all regulators are similar.

RE: Question about, Voltage regulator.

Hello all! I am a huge fan of the Radio South Regulator and was just at the shop yesterday. I have had very good success with the following: NMP Lithium Ion 2400 battery, Futaba Heavy duty switch, Radio South Regulator (various ranges regulated) and various choices of receivers which follows in that order. I have never tried any other brand due to the success that I have had in the future and everything that I described has worked flawlessly for years. I would have to agree that the extra lead would be for checking/charging purposes but that is why I choose to use a switch that I know that I can't go wrong or have to question which is which. I would also have to agree with UAL767 in that if you are reading 8.3 coming out of the regulator then something would be wrong with the regulator.

RE: Question about, Voltage regulator.

Hello there everyone,

Well I’ve decided to try to load up the regulator, by hooking it up to an old receiver.
( I was still worry about, what if it was damage and didn’t wont to damage a brand
new receiver ) And what would you know the guy’s that have said, load the regulator
up was/are right. I got 5.95 Volt at the banks where the servos will be plugged in.

Thanks al you guy’s for all the help/ information, it’s greatly appreciated

Yes Jim, its funny when you give an honest answer to someone that is having trouble and everybody in RCU is the expert that tells you its wrong. Even when they are running the item you designed built and tested. Funny eh?

Guys OhD is Jim Odinno and he builds the Jaccio regulators.

I've got a really funny saying I got from another site.

Arguments are on the Internet are kinda like the Special Olympics. You may win: but in the end your still retarded

I only come on here now for comic relief.

So have a Smile, and I hope to see you again at Riverside next Month.

Troy,

Well stated.

Jim,

Keep trying, you make a wonderful product.
