First 2m plane. Engine question

I just picked up a used Ice Point from a friend for a great price. I am planning on an OS 1.60 FX with pump
and a tuned pipe. But for the sake of asking, has anyone used the Super Tigre 2300 on a pattern plane or is it just
a waste of money?

Plane will be used for sportsman and intermediate.

Bob Pastorello put one in an 90 sized Excelleron. I've seen it fly and it had PLENTY of power on that little airframe...

Bob Pastorello and a few others have used the G2300. Karl Mueller makes a nice wrap around header for it as well. If you do a search on Excelleron 90 in this forum you should find Bob's postings.

Run the OS 1.60..save yourself the headache. You may or may not get a 2300 that runs. Jon Lowe has done amazing things with an OS 1.60 setup. That is the quickest easiest way to go, plus gobs of power. The 2300 is hurting on power too. For a beginner, the OS 1.60 is hard to beat, and I'm a YS guy now.

A YS 140 Sport or the older, YS 140FZ would also be good choices. Both are relatively easy to operate and can be found new and used on RCU for good prices.

Thanks tor the reccomendations.

rcpattern, I am going to stick with the 1.60 fx with a mueller header and tuned pipe. Perry pump.

F.imbriaco I wanted to keep it simple, as the plane had a 1.40 rx in it previoulsly all the plumbing is there for the 2 stroke.
also the 1.60 with header and pump still comes to less than 325.00

RE: First 2m plane. Engine question

Most four stroke YS engines need 30% nitro fuel to run properly, so, it results in a very expensive engine, if you use a lower nitro content fuel, you might have idle and transition problems besides of lack of power. Regarding YS service and technical support, in my personal experience, it is very deficient. I have had very bad experience with the YS technical support (YS performance). I lost my money by purchasing a YS engine that never ran properly from the beginning, YS Performance did not honor the warranty compromise. Forget the four cycle YS and go the two cycle OS 1.60 !

RE: First 2m plane. Engine question

I've flown YS engines for nearly 20 years now and I've not had but one engine go south and YS warranty service was Outstanding. Inside a week they had my engine repaired and returned. The engine again gave me problems and one call to YS had the required parts in the mail the next day. Turns out it wasn't the engine that went but my operation of it. I run my YS1.60 on 30% but every other engine I've run on either 15% or 20%. I also run OS engines and they are a fine product as well. Having flown both engines I can tell you the YS wins hands down in the power department.

RE: First 2m plane. Engine question

Over a ten year span , I have owned 5 YS engines; spanning from 91 to 140. I never had an issue with settings ( mixture or high speed) and all ran great on 20/20. As far as warranty , YS performance just warranted a new cam for my YS 120 FZ ( PURSUIT 120) that I bought in 2000 and have 300 + flights on . Now that's service !

In my experience with OS ( I currently have a 91 SurpassPump ( Kaos), 140RX ( BRIO), and 160 Fx( FOCUS 2 ) , they run well , but I doubt Hobby Services would honor a warranty 6 years later. A YS 160 will likely be my next pattern powerplant.

The bottom line is we should run whatever works for us.

F.imbriaco, where do you fly. I grew up in the Bridgewater area. I spent alot of time up your way fishing for muskies
in round valley and spruce run. now I live by 10 mins from Atlantic City.

RE: First 2m plane. Engine question

Overbored - I fly at an airport not far from Bridgewater -with 3 or 4 other pattern flyers. South Jersey area has a fair number of pattern flyers , too , from what I've been told.
Good luck !
