Starter recommendation for YS170DZ
 

Hi guys,
I need a new starter.
What are people using for starting their YS's?

What battery packs (eg Nicads or Gel cel or.....) are people using?

Kavan starter with a 3S 11.1V, 2,100 mAh li-po pack.

Wow, I never thought the Kavan was strong enough, they rate it on their site a 4S 1.20 size or 2S .90 size.

So will a 3 cell Lipo, at 11.1 volts, allow better current for the starter, even at the lower voltage, than say a 12 pack Nicad?

a cheap hobbico 180 starter with two small 12 volt hobbico batteries put together starts my stubborn Moki 2.10 everytime. by put together i mean in series to create 24 volts.

A 8000mah Pb battery (12v) and a cheapskate sullivan high-torque starter gets my DZ160 going .

what is a Pb Battery?

Also, there seem to be quite a few Sullivan models. Which one works?

The Kavan is geared, it has more than enough torque to start the 170.

I first started experimenting with li-po on starter by combining two 2S 7.4V, 2,100 at the beginning of this year. However, when they are fully charged, voltage can go over 16V. Even though, it has tremendous turning power, and one charge lasted for over a month of continuous usage, I ended up destroying three starters. I have since switched to my current 3S, and I still have more than enough power to turn over the 170.

A fully charged 11.1V li-po is about 12.6V, still way under the allowable rated 14.4V on the starter. I have been using a 12 pack ni-cd on the Kavan for over two years, it has a bit more cranking power than the 11.1V li-po, but you pay the weight penalty. In addition, I have to re-charge it almost every other week with the same usage.

I've been trying all sorts of different starters on my 170. The best set-up I've come up with is a magnum geared starter (similar to kavan) with
a 18v makita power drill lithium iron pack. I took the cells out of the actual pack and fitted them inside a small box.
This set-up turns the 170 over easy, even the first start of the day is no problem...

Tates in Geelong have the starters and I brought the 18v pack on ebay - just search it. Done plenty of work with it now, no sign of dying with 18v

Great, I have a Magnum starter, geared, so just need to power it.

I will look for those batteries on Ebay to check them out.

I uses Kanan (as shown in picture) with Pb 12A/H battery (normally uses for Motor Scooter)
starting power for my YS170 and other motors is my last problem.

Is anyone using A123 packs for a starter application? A 4S 2300 pack should be good as they can deliver high current with little voltage drop. The Kavan is good option for A DZ.

Have been using a 6s A123 on a Pacific Aero models geared starter. A friend described it as "obnoxious." 4s would probably be a better choice.

The Kavans a classic, wonderful starter. Well engineered, well build and it'll last a life time.
When I think how many Sullivans I've gone through over the years... and the Kavan still keep turning up... and turning!
It goes without saying in German.

So the Kavan starter, there is only the one size, isn't there?


Because on the Kavan site, the specs seem a bit too low for even a 1.20 4 stroke.

I am using Kavan with 14 x KAN 2000 Sub C NiMh cells with original Kavan battery holder. Heavy package gives starter nice stability and no worries about lipo's going bad in a long run.

There is only one model of these geared Kavan starters. Spare parts are available for Kavan starters from many European vendors.

Kavan parts are availble in Australia. Perth RC is the importer.

I was using my Kavan on two NiMH packs and the performance was pathetic. I have since switched to a Thunderpower 4S 2200mAh pack and the performance is awesome. I reckon it would start a DA 50!

I only charge the thing every now and then too. Because the LiPo can supply so much current you actually use less from the battery. On the NiMH pack the starter would actually stall which draws massive current.

If you have a magnum geared starter then simply put a LiPo on it.

I inherited a Kavan starter minus the fuse, what size does it use? I can't find any references to it anywhere

Plumber battery....inside chemistry joke!

From the "everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask" dept. Pb is chemical symbol for lead. The chemical name is latin based-Plumbus. Many moons ago, when hector was a pup, believe it or not, some types of PLUMBING in a house were made of lead piping. Also the term "Plumb" comes from the same source

The A123 brand ofbatteries in a 4s configuration make an excellent pack for the geared starters. Voltage is about 13 to 14 volts.lite weight and will easily start all 160's, 170's andI even use itongas engines up to 50cc.Very low self discharge.

Make that 85cc gas engine on a Pac Aero geared starter (the 14.4v one).:D

Of course this was only to test it on 4s A123 (2300)...

I needed a starter the other day and just got the Hobbico 180, and used A123 in 6S config, mounted to a plate under the bottom of the starter. Not quite as neat as the smaller Kavan, but at the time, I couldn't find one of those.
