Pattern Props

Hi folks,
I'm trying to get back in the game. I've purchased a new YS 170, new airplane, and I'm working on making a decision on a new radio.
I need some help with prop selection for the YS 170.

Thanks Donny Wright

Why such high pitches on these props? Is it due to high amounts of torque? I went from a 15x10 to a 16x8 for more climb and better throttle response on my 120AX, but see most 'pattern props' are anywhere from 10-14" pitch.

Donny,

Glad to see you are back flying. 18.1 X 11 is the best prop I've found for the 1.70. Slows down great on downlines, but still gives you the ability to fly a little faster on windy days than the 18.1 X 10.

Hope to see you at some contests next year,

Arch

gaRCfield:

Asked this question many times a few years ago. You actually have two items in your questions;
1. four strokes have more midrange torque than two strokes and get propped accordingly, and 2. you want cruising speed at half throttle or close to it, reserving power for the more demanding maneuvers without sacrificing speed. Higher pitch = cruising air speed at lower rpm thereby reserving power.
