Starter
So what the heck are you guys using to start your O.S. 1.60 engines? I tried the TorqMaster 180 heavy duty, but that didn't turn the beast over. I've been hand starting the engine with a glove, but want a starter that will work well for this season.

RE: Starter
Try a kavan starter, works great. My OS 1.60 starts right up. Check with Tower Hobbies.

RE: Starter
i add an additional 12 volt battery to my hobbico starter when i start my moki 2.10. of course some will object but it works and has for a while and i copied someone else who was doing the same thing. it is a cheap alternative. also, i have read that three 6 volt batteries work well too.

RE: Starter
Hi Nathan,
The Kavan starter is highly recommended. It will turn most big engines (including YS160's and 170's) on 12V, not to mention what it will do when running on 14.4V. It is not a direct drive starter, but rather a geared one, which I suppose is most of what makes the difference. You can find it at Hobby-Lobby. Danny |
RE: Starter
the downside of running a hobbico 180 on 24 volts is the speed. the starter really spins

RE: Starter
I think I'll give the Kavan a try. Am I looking at the right starter!? It says it starts a 60 or 90. Hardly a 160!

RE: Starter
B&P Associates sells them too along with battery packs. Great people to deal with as well.

RE: Starter
Nathan,
Try the Kavan with 2 of 6-cell NiCD car packs. I've used it that way for more than 4 years. Need the kavan starter? let me know. I have two new in box. IP |
RE: Starter
Try Tamazo starter Singahobby sells it. Also sullivan dynatron with 14.4 li-poly batts.

RE: Starter
Buy a Kavan starter.
Buy a soft rubber insert. The supplied one is too hard which causes it to slip on the spinner. Buy a 4S 2000mAh Lipo. A123 cells might be a good option too but LiPo's will transform the starter... You could start a DA 50 with this set-up.... Cheers Jason. |
RE: Starter
Nate, what did you have for batteries with the TorqMaster, and did you have the big cone replacement?
|
RE: Starter
I'm running the Magnum geared starter on 14.4v from B&P assoc. Previous to that i ran the Magnum geared starter off my regular field box battery.

RE: Starter
Thanks. I unfortunately just got one of those starters, but hoping with a few more volts and only a 1.20 and a 1.10 I'll still be OK.
Good luck and let us know what you get and how it works. Once school's done for the year and I'm on summer salary I'm sure I'll be replacing my starter, again. |
RE: Starter
I'll give another vote for the B&P starter. I have a magnum with the 18v cells, and it's been working well for about 4 years now (I think, maybe more?)
I need to get a new one though, mine is rust colored after years of nitro... -M |
