Phoenix Pattern Contest...
I understand the competitor that won F3A was competing in his first (pretty sure) "pattern" contest...the name is vaguely familiar...Mark Leseberg. The field of F3A competitors included a couple of previous NATS F3A Finals competitors. Mark flew the Lancaster, CA pattern contest in the 2002 timeframe with a very old Dr J'ish type of plane. Then flew in Las Vegas in the 2003 time frame in FAI I believe, with a CA Models, Eclipse 3D maybe. I'm glad to see him compete again in pattern.

Mark flew really well. You could see him adjust his flying style as the contest progressed. He flew slow and close in the first couple rounds and adjusted to a slightly larger and faster style in the later rounds. He indicated that he's serious about F3A flying and I think that is great news.
The contest was really fun. The weather was absolutely perfect, you couldn't have had better flying conditions. Phoenix is almost always fantastic for flying this time of year. Hats off to Rusty and Robert and the SVF crew for putting on this stellar event. Rusty wanted to have a separate, single round, unknown contest. Open to any of the competitors. As it turned out, he selected the IMAC Intermediate routine. It seems I was the only one to sign up for it and everyone else chickened out. Too bad, it would have been fun. We'll have to try it again sometime. |

Steve, The IMAC Intermediate would not have been an unknown for Rusty. LOL! We will be flying that sequence this Saturday at the San Diego EMAC. I will be flying my Passport, bring yours and join us! |

He graciously bowed out of the unknown. He also said that Mark couldn't fly it either (now that would have been downright unfair). That left just me. I'd like to give it a try with the passport. You should have come to Phoenix, the weather was absolutely perfect. You need to try to make one of the next few contests. I don't think I can make it Saturday, though I think it would be a fun time. I'd be flying the "unknown" while everyone else was well practiced. I'll see how things work out in the next week, maybe we can get together during the week at OCMA.

I figured Rusty would do the "right" thing. Sorry you can't make the EMAC, hopefully another time. I do plane on making one or two of the more local pattern events this year. My travel will be limited due to work, and I am reserving most of it for IMAC. I have been practicing the Advanced Pattern, and enjoying it. Given a couple of days notice, I should be able to get up to OCMA, what time do you normally fly?
