Are most people staying at a certain motel? What nights?
I'm going to make the trip down and trying to decide if I want to stay in NJ on Friday night, or just drive straight to the Poconos and get there later Friday night. |

I am not heading over until Saturday morning, but I have reservations for the Days Inn in East Stroudsburg for Saturday night.
The room has double beds and if somebody wants to split the cost with me the total will be $45 for decent lodging! |

Joe,
What is the orientation of the runway at the contest site - North/South, East/West?? I have been flying mostly right-to-left in practice flying (ok, big mistake!) but have a chance Friday to practice both ways. On the good side, I have been purposely flying crosswinds and quartering wind every time I fly. |

RE: 20th Annual Pocono Pattern Contest June 26th and 27th
Finally got a chance to fly Dave Lockhart's electric Bravo. Thanks Dave!! It was quite interesting and enlightening.
Dave says that the powerplant delivers around 3500 watts and I believe it. That's terrific power to weight for the plane, better than anything else in pattern land I think. That's pretty darn close to 5 hp, roughly equivalent to 45cc gassers on pipe but with much better midrange grunt. It was dead calm last night so I flew the plane at half throttle pretty much throughout, excepting for a couple vertical up line snaps. But I think the thing that was even more impressive about the set-up, at least as much as can be gleaned from 5 minutes of flying a totally foreign set-up in dead calm conditions, was the downline brakes. I thought that my SAP 30cc powered Temptress improved greatly in her downlines from the Webra days, but Dave's electric brakes were much better. That much power could be gotten used to quickly. I am not prepared to go through the expense of converting to electric but it has got my attention for certain. |

This contest was in the Poconos, eastern PA on the border of New Jersey. It is a popular destination point for visitors from the tri-state area as they enjoy the scenic environment and the rustic night clubs. Some visitors passed by the flying field and decided to stop in to spectate. I am not used to pattern flying being a spectator sport, so I felt the urge to snap a few photos of our spectators with my iPhone. Here are some of them:

Nice pics Joe... I may have to change districts... our spectators are usually the elderly and the infirm.

I have to include one more pic. This contest was 4 of the best flights I've ever had and I feel very proud of my progress so far. I am really happy with the switch to electric as the ability to forget about engine performance has allowed me to concentrate primarily on flying skills, and I'm now making corrections all throughout the sequence. This was the first time where I actually felt like a pattern pilot.
