Fuel - Storage & Shelf-Life
This has probably been hashed over in the past. I am getting ready to get back to the field, flying that is, after about a 6 month layoff. I have 3.5 gallon's of Cool Power Pro-Pattern 20% and 2 gallon's of CP 15%, on hand now.
When purchased March of this year, the LHS had to order it. Use in YS110 and OS 61 SF's. Am I OK here with this batch, or replace ? Thanks, Crank |
RE: Fuel - Storage & Shelf-Life
A group of us used to buy in bulk and store fuel for extended periods. None of us ever had any problems. We all kept everything in closed jugs in the garage. Give a try you should be fine.

RE: Fuel - Storage & Shelf-Life
Hey Vince,
I've been bulk buying fuel for decades. Keep the jugs in the shipping cases or OUT OF SUNLIGHT. I've always kept mine in my basement and never had problems even after several years; this includes fuels with castor oil in them, though I stopped using castor almost 20 years ago...at least in my fuel :D. Sunlight (UV radiation) degrades fuel (and everything else) and exposure to temperature extremes will cause castor oil to semi-solidify (white flakes). High temps will expand fuel jugs and as they contract in cooler temperatures moist air can be introduced into the jug - another no-no. I'm finishing off the last of the 128 gallons I bought 3 years ago and it runs exactly the same as the first gallons. Happy flying, Will |
RE: Fuel - Storage & Shelf-Life
IMOanything that has been opened is going to have enough water in it to affect performance after about 2 months depending where you live. Glow fuel obviously is alcohol based and once opened begins attracting moisture. If unopened and still under vaccum it should keep for years if properly stored as previously stated.

RE: Fuel - Storage & Shelf-Life
As long as it was stored in a cool place, away from direct sunlight and tightly capped, it will last for years. As Anthony mentioned, a bunch of us D1 pilots were doing bulk fuel buys and storing the jugs for future use. I recently tapped into some leftover fuel from '07 and it was just fine.
