Range is the same contrary to some claims
BUT- the ability to still work in a environment which is blocking or tends to block the signal may be much different.

If both types are correctly installed -I doubt you could ever find which worked better
The little four channel has an amp which is the littlelump on the long whisker
It's job is to detect low signal (poor reception on an antenna) and switch/ boost signal.
Again it isn't range -it is the ability to clean up a degraded/ blocked signal and keep reception going that really counts.
Diversity , having more than one path for receiving a good signal becomes more important as range increases. That is the reason for more than one whisker on most equipment and is the reason Spektrum makes available multiple ,separate rx for models which are prone to block signals. As a side note - I saw one of those four channel rx wrapped in sponge and stuffed under the ESC in a model - the user said it seemed to cut out in the air-
A quick fix in proper location fixed that.

Why would they put the amp in the whisker instead of on the receiver circuit board?

It is ahead of the coax-right at the tuned end-
Apparently it is quite sensitive but I really don't know any of the particulars -other than what I mentioned
