Extending Servo Leads

Thread Starter

I need to extend servo leads and the only solder i have on hand states that it is for metal work and is silver bearing, acid core and lead free.. I usually have some for "electrical work" but I'm out. Will this be ok to use or should i make the trip for electrical?

You dont want acid core for electronics work

The acid flux is appropriate for sweating plumbing fittings or silver soldering landing gear, but with finely stranded copper wire as used on servos, the acid will corrode the fine strands very quickly.

In theory, all acid core soldering SHOULD be completely washed clean, so that any residual acid is neutralized, and have no lasting effect.

Mike, all good advice.
Make the trip now, or you may be able to pick some up on your way to replace the airframe.
Short-cuts add up quick, making for predictable results.

While not recommended, you can get by using an acid flux if (and this is a big IF) you neutralize the completed joint, You can do this by scrubbing thoroughly with water with soda (regular baking soda) dissolved in the water then rinse with alcohol or acetone. You must be sure to do a real good cleaning job as any acid residue will soon show up as corrosion.

With finely stranded small gauge wire I doubt that this is possible. The flux will tend to wick up under the insulation along with the solder where you cant be sure it's neutralized.

Why is this even being debated. Go to Radio Shack or Wally World and pick up a $2 roll of rosin core.
