Default No range with rc car

I bought a rustler with a hobby wing esc, castle motor, and a team losi transmitter. The car is crazy fast, i have to actually change the gearing due to over heating, but that's not the problem. My problem is my dad has a slash with stock r/x and t/x and he gets almost 3x the distance i do before i have to walk towards mine to get my transmitter to control it again. We both have 2.4 ghz. Is it the esc? Or just my t/x and r/x have crappy range? Im new to r/c so sorry for the newbie question.

I opened up the casing for my reciever or whatever and its a losi mrx-3000 if that helps at all. I looked it up and it seems a couple people have my same problem but cant figure it out. I am using dollar store batteries in the remote. Maybe I'll try that. But even when they were new batteries i had the problem.

Some radios have better range than others. Your issue could be as simple as that.

What is the status of the antenna? Is it stock length and routed out into an antenna tube?

Yes,check the antenna on the receiver. That part that matters most is on the very end of the wire. If that is damaged, cut etc...you will loose range.

The antennae looks fine. It comes out the side of the casing with all the other wires that go to the esc. Online it looks like just a grey wire so it looks normal. I was thinking about if i should drill a small hole in the casing and feed it through a tube

You want it as far away from the other wires as possible. Up into a tube is ideal.

I bought cheap dollar store batteries for the remote. Will that also limit my range?

No ,but dead /almost dead batteries will.
Put some good quality brand new batteries in the transmitter and in the truck and report back.
If the receiver antenna "looks" good and it still has limited range then I suspect the transmitter has been dropped at some point. Only thing you can do is to start swapping components one at a time (transmitter, receiver) with known good ones until the issue is resolved.

If you have a local hobby shop you can get a Spektrum DX2 for $60.00 with a receiver.
