I have a Spektrum DX9 that I am going to setup as a wireless trainer as the instructor radio. My friend has a Spektrum DX6e that will be the student radio. When I bind the student radio to my DX9, do I have to create an identical model first on the DX6e with identical rates and expos, or does that information transfer over to the student radio automatically?

No. You just bind the DX6e to the DX9 while the DX9 has selected the model you are going to buddy box.
