I've ordered a flysky tx/rx combo. Is there anything else I'm going to need to use this heli?

Browse around Ebay, search "RC Helicopters", chances you will find the exact one you have. Most of these 3ch types come with their own transmitter and generally do not work with any other brand.

I watched a youtube where a guy changed his IR heli into a 2.4GHz heli, isn't this the same thing basically?

You can certainly try. Some of these little rigs have the speed control built into the receiver electronics so that may prove difficult. However you won't really know until digging into it.
