Default Intresting Fact about the 9C

I bought one of the first 9C transmitters and from the 4th month on the Chrome plate on the front of the transmitter that starting spotting. I called after it started to look bad. When I called support they said it could happen some times. I said ok and now the whole faceplate is cover and looks terrible. I called support today and he said "It is can be caused by fuel getting on the transmitter". I thought well we do use them around airplanes with fuel! He did provide me with the part number so I could order one from a shop (which I did today).

I think futaba is missing the mark. Why would you select something that would discolor from fuel? I am embarrassment to have people see the transmitter and feel futaba would not want them to look so bad at the field.

I did not spill fuel on the transmitter and can only think I had fuel on my hand?
Wonder if anyone had this problem? I do like the radio but feel support is poor.
Thank you,
Jim

My radio is over a year old and still looks great. No problems of any kind and it has seen a little fuel. I try not to leave it out in the sun for extended periods and try to keep it clean. The little things go a long way.

my 8u is starting to do that too. how much was the part for the 9c? i don't think it is fuel. it is probably from holding it a lot and sweaty palms etc

I am also seeing spotting on my 9C, although I do clean it with alcohol once a month. I remember that the earlier batches had peeling chrome but that was resolved. How much did you get the front bezel for ? Do you know how to replace it ?

i know it might sound like a dumb question, but you removed the plastic film didn't you? if you leave that on it will eventually start wearing off in spots.

The thin plastic coating is meant to protect the faceplate before delivery to the consumer. It is not fuelproof nor is it meant to be.

My 9C has had this happen, but it's usually something that cleans off. I too have not spilled fuel on my TX, but I have spilled fuel on my hands which even when wiped off, could transfer fuel/oil to the TX.

My plating has cracked as well. It is not a problem, just makes the transmitter look abused!

I did pull the film off. I also clean my radio regularly. They say it is from fuel. I thought it was intresting though.

If the "spotting" you described is anything like what I see on my 9C, I don't think it's really a defect. The very thin coating appears to be some kind of clear coating over the silver chrome parts of the front bezel. I can rub my finger over the surface hard to get rid of all of it. It doesn't scratch, dull or affect the silver chrome in anyway. It does appear to be a thin coating meant to be rubbed off in regular use. Once it's all worn off, the chroming shines brighter than ever.

The features and benefits of the 9C far outweigh little cosmetic details like this.

Whatever it is, don't clean it with an aggressive solvent like acetone[X(]

Jim, just to make sure we are talking about the same thing, I am attaching pic of the spots on my front bezel. They can't be cleaned away. I see more in areas which come into direct contact with my hands. Must be a combo of sweat and nitro. Yeah, i wished the silver coating was of a better quality, but I've learnt to live with it. I suppose Futaba sells replacement bezels. Does this happen to 9Z as well, I wonder ?

For the 9C they do sell a replacement panel Manf. part number "HSP-78238". That is what mine looks like. That was quite a while ago. Now it looks worse. I do love the radio but seems I will have to purchase a new one. I hear they are going to release the 9Z with an update. It should be intresting to see what it looks like. Thank you for your support.

Jim, where did you buy it from ? What's the procedure for the replacement ? Do you need to desolder the switches, how do you pull the knobs out, etc......

I did not get the part yet but ordered from Hobby garage. I took a quick look and I do not think we have to remove switches. I will post when the part comes in.
The phone number is 630-416-8050. Dave will be able to help you.

It's not on Tower too. I guess it's specially ordered.

I think the spots can be touched up and here's what I do for my car http://www.web-cars.com/detail/touchup.php
