Default 8u question

We bought a 8us radio from someone at our field. Just went to use it for the first time to fly and when I was doing a range check with it at about 25 feet away, with antenna down, plane wouldn't do anything. With the antenna up it seemed fine. Did not try to fly with it because it was a brand new u can do 60. Put module in my 9cap and it range checked fine. Should we send this in and have checked out?
Thanks for your reply, blue ice.
