Default Supplying Servos with 7.2V

Hi, ive read a few places where people run their servos off 7.2V packs.

Im running mainly hitec 5645's, i hear servos eclectronics can withstand 9v.

I have 7.2 battery packs (all i could get in south africa), should i cut out a cell, or drive them at a higher voltage?

Any reason why one should not run servos at 7.2v? The extra torque would be nice though.
Thxns guys!!!!

The servos can handle it, but their life span will be significantly reduced. It is best to stick to a maximum of 5 cells.

Just the servo's possibly, but Mike's right you're gonna fry them fast. You more than likley can't run a receiver on 7.2 volts though. You're better off buying higher torque servos rather than running them over voltaged like that. There's no real advantage, and a lot of downfalls.

You could always use 6v voltage regulators. Many, many flyers do this to knock 7.2-4 lithium packs down.

Receivers have internal regulators so they can handle the voltage. (At least Futaba)

That may be the case for the receivers as they need a stabilised voltage for the IF generation, but most servo's do not have voltage regulators. Here in the UK, the distributors for JR do not recommend exceeding manufacturers stated voltage.

If in doubt, use an external voltage regulator to bring your pack down.

Hi, ive read a few places where people run their servos off 7.2V packs.
You might have been reading about Multiplex - their rx and servos are rated up to 6 cell 7.2volt. I am not aware of any other brand that rates their kit for more than 5 cell, and a lot of servos such as many of the Futaba are specified for 4 cell only.

There are servos that require 7.2 volts or more but you can't run that much power threw the receiver. You must use a separate power supply and switch to the servo to power it. These are special servos.

my FMA receivers are rated for up to 9 volts and i've seen spec sheets on many others listing voltages up around 20.
