Default cmp quest gyro????

i have an old CMP Quest gyro in my kalt enforcer helicopter. it has a small electric motor in it that turns on when i turn the radio on. im completely new to gyros. there is a switch that makes the motor turn in the opposite direction on the gyro, there is also a screw that seems like it adjusts the trim of the servo, and the gain which is the sensitivity? i have the gain turned all the way up because im learning to hover. i dont think the gyro is that good because i have to keep trimming the tail servo to get it not to turn. should i keep the gyro or upgrade? if i upgrade whats the best gyro to get for around 100 bucks? also there are 3 wires on it and only 2 are hooked up, what do those do??

thanks,
dave

here are some pics of the gyro

Its an old mechanical gyro. 1 wire goes to the rudder servo. 1 wire goes to the reciever rudder channe, this will be a 3 wire. 1 probably only has 1 wire goes to the reciever in the gear channel and is used for remote gain.

The best thing you can do is ditch it and get a heading hold gyro such as the Futaba 401 with a 9254 servo which is going to run you about 180 bucks but will grow with you and last quite a long time.

You can get it without the super servo but it costs 120 w/o the servo and 180 with a hundred dollar servo, do the math.

JR has some decent gyros as well.

The 401 by futaba with the servos you are using should be fine; there are always plenty of them for sale on EBay, with and without the servo.

If you get a 9253 or 9254 do so. Yes a 401 will work with the servo's you have but you have to make sure you set DS Mode to OFF or you'll burn up the servo and there's a little more twiddleing to get it to work right such as setting delay and fooling with that until it behaves correctly.

If you get it with one of the afore mentioned servos, just follow the directions, tweak the gain depending on your setup and your done.

If your looking into mail order try
http://www.ronlund.com for Ricks
or http://www.heliproz.com for HeliProz

Both are cheaper than tower, also you can email or call them for current prices on Futaba and OS stuff because they can't put their real prices on the web due to Distributer Agreements called MAP or Minimum Advertised Pricing.

For example a 401/9254 combo from tower runs about 219 plus shipping, from Ricks its 182 plus a few dollars pri mail shipping.

I meant for your future shopping needs. I'd rather have a new one from Ricks for 120 than a used one off Ebay for 116 and not know its history. My personal feelings anyhow.
