Freq Monitor W/ 15 minute recording?
Hey gang,
How about a personal frequency monitor with the capability to record the last 10 or 15 minutes for playback in case of "trouble?"
Has it been done? If so, where?
If not, what would it take?
I'll assume a solid state recording chip? Kinda like a memo recorder with RF receiving?

FMA Direct has a Flight Systems Flight Recorder.
Might be something to take a look at.

I have a Yaesu FRG-9600 that I monitor the 72MHz R/C frequency's with and it has a line out to hook up to a tape recorder.
With a simple mod it also covers the 50MHz Ham R/C frequency's.
Icom also made some nice receivers that covers 72MHz.
I'm about two miles away from our field and I can tell when someone is flying a plane.
Is someone trying to shoot you down?

No, I don't mean to imply an intentional shoot down. Not at all. Get along very well wherever I go. Just at big meets it's MUCH easier to listen and record before and after turning on. Could help solve those mystery "hits"
Not interested in the entire spectrum...just the channel I'm on. Maybe 2 sets of Xtals at the most.

You have a good idea.
Something small would be nice.
It might be possible to build one around an R/C receiver.
Just add an audio amp and a speaker, plus the recorder.
You got me thinking.

I did a quick google search and found this company.
http://www.winbond-usa.com/mambo/content/view/36/140/
They make digital audio recorders from 6 Seconds to 17 Minutes.
Here's another company that sells a small 2 minute recorder.
http://store.qkits.com/moreinfo.cfm/QK146B
Take the audio from the discriminator of an R/C receiver and run it to the input of the recorder and it should do what you want.

RE: Freq Monitor W/ 15 minute recording?
A problem might stem from the fact that if you are trying to detect an "interfering" signal, that frequency would already be in use by the operational plane and thus is already being detected and recorded. Could you accurately detect a second instance of the same frequency?

Hi Ross I was thinking the same thing.
I just did a quick test to see if I could detect a second transmitter.
Using my Yaesu FRG-9600 receiver tuned to 72.990MHz
I can clearly hear the second transmitter when both signals are of equal strength.
If I reduce the output of the second transmitter then I only hear the stronger signal.
So if he leaves the monitor in the pits, he would hear another pilot turning on a transmitter, if they did it from farther away he would not.
The farther away from his own transmitter the better it would work.
He would also hear if he had a problem with his own transmitter.
Another thing is what if a strong paging transmitter came on the air 10KHz away, he wouldn't hear it but the receiver in the plane might get a glitch from it.

Good discussions guys! I have the Hobbico "scanner"...Nice but doesn't allow any "history" Just tells you what is happenning before you turn on.
I'm looking for something that will record, ie provide some history, of the last 10-15 minutes of on time. Would it be a perfect gadget? Dunno. But it may help solve those mystery glitches and "gulph" crashes.
The field I fly at has a very good control system and we all talk with each other. So its a real safe place to fly. Its just that I go to other fields as a guest and to funflys where the control MAY not be so "secure." We ALL know "poop happens". Knowing a shoot down occurred instead of a randon thing may help in preventing it next time.
Ever look for something that wasn't there?
A RX outputting into a speaker taped to a voice recorder is just about as simple as it gets. Maybe something a bit "slicker" can be put together for under a hundred bucks? Not wanting to mess with micro cassettes, so solid state recording is my choice of recording medium.
Comments?

That's what I was talking about.
A receiver with digital audio recorder all in one small enclosure.
If your good with electronics you can make one, the parts are out there.
