Go with either. This debate will never end, and there will be no losers only winners because both radios are excellent choices. The JR guys will tell you that their system is better and the Futaba guys will tell you that their system is better. If you already have Futaba gear then stay with the 9C so all of your stuff can be compatible, likewise with the JR. I have the 9C and love it; I have programmed an 8103 and feel that the 9C is more intuitive.

I also like switch assignability of the 9C. You just can't appreciate that feature until you have set up your own airplane with the switches you need in exactly the right places. Using this feature, with the 9C you can put all your triple rates on one switch, whereas with the JR you would have to set up three free mixes to accomplish the same.

I think this poll will tell you the market share for each! Everyone will just vote for what they own!
The 9C struck me as better value-for-dollar when I checked it out.
Futaba currently offers a free campac with the 9C.
Tower tosses in a give certificate.

They're functionally equivalent for the most part. FlyFalcons is right in that you should purchase which ever is compatible with your existing gear. If this is your first purchase, find out what your club's instructors use. That should be the way you go.
The other thing to consider is feel. I'd not spend hundreds on a radio without knowing how it felt in my hands. Different people have different size hands and different preferences for switchs/gimbals.

Perhaps you should look around at your flying field and see what the majority there use. If the ratio is 99 to 1 with Futaba, that's what I'd get. If it were 50/50 than I'd get the one at the better price...both transmitters tx are good pieces of equipment.

I've seen some really good deals on 8103 systems with the new 811 Digital Servos.
If you broke down the cost the x mitter was about $270.
I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.
I really like the placement of the 2 aux channels on the Futaba.
I like the Datasafe option with the JR.
Either one will make you happy.

My 2 Cents
I have the 9C.... I shopped around, not just for price, but overall best bang for the buck. I settled with the 9C and I am tickled pink.
I have a hard enough time programming my alarm clock to wake me up in the morning........ but I found the Futaba to be relatively easy to program. They also have a special deal now that you get a CAMPAC module free with your purchase. That means 14 models in the TX memory total........Again my 2 cents

I just purchased a 9C, I liked the fact that the 9C does not have a Lit battery to keep the setting alive. I have been using a ACE Micropro 8000 and liked the fact that no battery was needed to retain the programing.

9C is the better more cost effective, easier to program and use radio... for now! I'm sure JR will better it and than Futaba will better JR. Horizon showed us (for those of us that didn't know how to do it) how to program a radio for "Crow" mode. The 9C has this built in. It's like any business, stay one step ahead, and Futaba is one step ahead and $100 cheaper!

I bought two new 8103's last year, not because I though they were any better than Futaba, but they were readily available on 53MHz, and Futaba only offered 50MHz.
Actually, I think Futaba is a little more user friendly.
You won't go wrong with either one.

Stealth,
That isn't a fair comparison. If you want PCM protection, then the radios to compare are the 9C with PCM or the 8103 with PCM receiver; if you don't want PCM, then you need to compare the PPM (FM) packages evenly.
If you'd like to see a comparison of the two radio systems, you can email futaba at [email protected] with "9cvs8103" in the body of the email. Assuming the auto system is still functioning, the system will answer you immediately with a comparison.

Just looked at Chief's web site, 8103 (fm) w/537 (non-digital) servos $469.95. Futaba 9caf (fm) w/3001 servos $379.95. The Futaba is $90 cheaper for the same "Basic" thing. I bought my 9caf in 12/01 and the price was a major consideration. Very happy with my 9caf. Jr's cheapest digital servo is $48, I can't see where they would drop the price $100 (from $470) then throw in $192 worth of servos.
