Default R5014 antenna cut to 4"?

Just retired my 9Z and look to start flying with the 14mz. One issue I have is using the long antenna. I've read in this forum that cutting the will improve it's resistance to noise which is good! My problem is all the aircraft I fly (turbines, heli's and large scale) all use base loaded units like the "Revolution whip antenna" http://dreamworksrc.com/catalog/prod...roducts_id=371 . Am I asking for trouble using this with the R5014? I kind of know what the official response would be.... Futaba must have given this some thought as most high end rc (jets and heli's) use base loaded units. We could fix all this and just release the 2.4 module like Futabe did with the surface radio : )

Thanks,
Shaun Bell

Hi Shaun, I am going to move this over to the General radio forum, as I am sure there are people who have used these base loaded antennas.

But please remember that we do NOT recommend modifying our receivers for use with a base loaded antenna.

Yes it is correct an antenna what is less effective will also pick up less noise. So if we put a 50 ohm resistor across the RX input there will be no noise, but also no signal. The object is to get the best signal to noise ratio (this is where the difference between signal and noise is the most) and this will happen where the antenna is resonant: the recommended length.

How did I know that was going to be the response lol? Oh well, I asked. From what I heard about the 5014, I'm not sure I trust it in a turbine or heli. Guess I'll just hold my breath for Futaba or Extreme to make a 2.4 system to plug in....sooner than later I hope. after flying for more than a decade without even a radio glitch I wouldn't want to start now. Maybe I should have stuck with my ZAP for a while longer.

Talk about over thinking a problem. I actually went to install the 5014 in my jet and it hit me. This antenna is so short I'll run it out a plastic tube pointing strait up out of the fuse. It's longer than some base loaded units, but shorter than others. Just hope I don't see any of the dreaded lockout.

shaunrbell,
I have two of these receivers one with the long ant. the other with the short and I have never had a glitch. They both are great and the movement of the servos are so silky smooth compared to my 1024 receivers. It is a subtle but noticable difference in the air.
