Default Futabs 9001's. How are they??

I am thinking of buying (4) Futaba 9001's for a model I am nearly complete. I have no experience with this servo. They are going on a 1/4 scale Skybolt if that makes a difference. Your thoughts please.

They are coreless, with very good centering. I just don't think many people have purchased/used this servo.

It might be worth the extra money to get 9202's as they have better torque ratings.

Default Futaba 9001 servos

I use 9001's in a Magic Extra and I have no complaints. I am also using them in a U-Can-Do-3D (except rudder) and although I haven't flown it yet, I expect them to be sufficient. They are very reliable servos with moderate torque and speed, coreless motor, and ball bearings. If they have the torque and speed that you need, then I see no reason not to use them. In the servo market you get what you pay for but buying servos with more capability than a particular aircraft needs is a waste of money.

They are kind of expensive if you pay full retail. I got a couple of them bulk (no packaging or accessories) a while back for around $25 each. For that price, they are great for 1.20 plane or smaller in applications where you might need the precision of a coreless but not gargantuan amounts of torque. I plan to use mine to driver the dual elevators of my 1.20 Lanier Extra ARF.

I sometimes see folks compare the 9001 to something like the Hitec 605BB, but that's really apples and oranges. I have 605BBs too and they are good servos too, but that's a 3-pole ferrite core motor.

BTW, I agree that buying servos with ratings far exceeding what the plane needs is plain waste of money. Folks tend to ignore the manufacturer's servo recommendation the same way they ignore the engine size recommendation.

Overbuying on servo's isn't always a waste of money, because if you use a servo that has twice as much torque as you can use it's going to last longer because it's under reduced operating load comparable to a lower torque servo operating at 100%

Default 9001's

Tower had them on "Inventory Reduction" a while back for about that..I bought 8 of them then and have 5 more I bought here for about the same price.

I run 4 of them in a Raptor 30 sized heli, 2 on the ailerons of a Duellist, rudder/elevator on a profile...They seem to be working fine.

Servo City has them 4 for $148...not quite as good as the inventory reduction prices. I didn't see any inventory reductions at Tower.
