Default Multiplex Servos for 40%, I'm A Neophyte

Looking at a deal on a 40% Edge with two multiplex servos on the rudder. I don't have the model of the servos right now but will get it today. Since I know nothing about this line except what I found in the search threads, here are a couple of things I'm wondering about. How do the gear trains hold up, and are they metal? I don't have a programmer, will I need one and how much are they? Are parts close or readily available? I guess they have a bunch of pulling power, but am told they are slow compared to other servos. Any pros or caveats about them?
Thanks in advance_bob

These are great servos and hold up very well. We used to use them all the time. Then we discovered Hitec 5735's. We changed them all out and have never looked back. They are notably slower than others IMO. I used to watch them move and relate the movement to a second hand of a clock moving, very mechanical or notchy through it's travel arc.

If I recall they have a nylon gear train.

You don't need a programmer.

Default Thanks Mike

Are there metal arms available? Since this setup consists of two jumbo's in tandem, how would you get them centered together?

Multiplex shares the same output shaft spline as JR servos, so yes you can find aluminum arms. Most used to simply bolt an additional arm to the nylon wheel or double arm for increased throw.

Long before servo matching devices were available it was a tried and true method of wither finding two servos that were similar at center and end-point or you mixed a slave to the rudder channel.

I don't recall for sure, but the jumbos may not have been programmable. I know we never programmed any of ours.

multiplexusa

Check the servo specs and let me know what you think about the Jumbo being programmable? Thanks_bob

Look's like their programmable to me. I noted the new third generation digi amplifier which may have alleviated the notchy movement we were accustomed too.

Michael,
I don't think the metal arms of the Hitec line will fit the Jumbos.
The Jumbos and Jumbo speed have metal gears, they might be slower, but they don't break, and even if they are not as fast as you can move the stick, that's not where it counts, its in the air.

If they are McV2, then they are programmable, if they are the Digi's, yes they are smoother and only programmable for reverse rotation.
By the way Multiplex servos were the first to be programmable, as a matter fact they were the first with digital servos and are now in there 3rd generation digi's

Yes, get in touch with Karlton Spindle or Mike Mayberry, Karlton is with Multiplex USA and Mike is with Hitec.

They are not one and the same, God forbid, but Hitec bought Multiplex Earlier this year.

Default hMMM

Not sure what you meant by God Forbid, but I guess what I meant was, can HiTech supply parts and service?

My sarcasm simply meant that Multiplex is in a league all by themselves and much better quality then Hitec.

I was being sarcastic with my first cup of coffee
The service for Multiplex is still being done by Ernie Pritchard
