Why is the Futaba 148 servo so popular for throttle?
?
The specs don't show it as being much different from standard servos. Is it more precise or something, and if so why not use it for other purposes?
thanks, Balin

Its a perfectly servicable run of the mill servo. Not specialized or escpecially expensive. If you had more powerful (BB perhaps) servos you'd use them on a tail surface maybe. If you had slim servos of higher quality you'd fit them in the wing for ailerons. If you had a run of the mill servo you'd use it on the throttle where little power or special traits are required.
I'd feel good using 148's anywhere on a 40 sized sport flyer for that matter though.

It's cheap, comes standard with low end radios so lots of them laying around and isn't good for much as airplanes get larger or real precision is desired.

Most people have one or two. I'm sure eventually the 3003 will take over after a while. On my gassers I like to use something designed to handle higher vibrations, but for everything else they work well.

OK. So no point in going out a buying 148's for the throttle. I've got a drawer full of Hitec hs-81 metal gear servos. I usually put them on the throttle. I'll stick with that for now.

The 148's are excellent servos for their cost. I have several used on ailerons on 1/4 scale planes (one for over 12 years with at least 500 flights on it). For most 60 size and under planes, you will be hard pressed to find a better servo, especially for the money. Their construction is superbl with a very high mean time to failure record, probably better than any others.

I think the 148 (with BB conversion) is the best servo for the money. I have tested several 148's, hitec 425's, hitec 605's etc. and found the 148's consistently center better that others of the same price (except 3001,3003,3004). They are indirect drive so they should center well for a long time.
If you need more power run them on 6.0V.
I think the Tower T-69 is really a BB 148 for only $14!!!! That is the best deal going!!!
