Default Rules of 2.4ghz antennas?

This has been an unasked question from me for a long time. Does a 2.4ghz antenna have to be exposed outside of the vehicle or not? Will it really effect performance and range having it inside the electronics (radio) box rather than sticking out?

It depends on the material that is surrounding it. If its CF then you will suffer a serious range reduction. If conventional materials, then its virtually transparent.
