I could be mistaken but I think there's a special trainer cord. . . I think because both radios use two different voltages. Chec futaba's site under the radio comparison chart, I think it mentions it there.

what do you want to know?
i have the 12Z as teacher and my 6EX as student setup.
voltages are not a concern here as the "student" box never uses it's own power, so the power switch on the student box is set to off..........the teacher box powers the student box.

you need the micro to micro trainer cord.
you need to set the functions of the sticks to match the stick funtions of the 9C....example, if channel 1 is aileron on the 9C, then the channel needs to be set to 1 on the 12Z as well, and so on.
otherwise the system is setup just as it's described in the 12Z manual.
try the "Mix" mode as well, as it allows the teacher and student to be active at the same time................but this will be something you will want to play with a bit to make sure that's how you want to fly together.

I'd say the voltages are a concern. The student box needs to be able to use the voltage the teacher box supplies.

this is wrong...........only the 12Z will be powered thus powering the slave Tx...........the student Tx is never turned on.
read thru the manual posted above, pages 28-29.
i set my 12Z up for one aircraft to use as a trainer................again, the voltages are not a concern.

It's all set guys. Thanks to all for the help.

Worse part about doing this is that I had to configure the 12Z channel assignments to match the 9C channel assignments, after spending hours on an elaborate program for the 12Z.

Hopefully I'll get my Turbine waiver this weekend and I won't need the buddy box any more.

Thanks again

Bob,
i did the same exact thing......had the Big Stik all set with everything i wanted to program into it.......thought to myself, "how cool is this"......hooked up the 6EX and then started all over......best part is that the 12Z makes all this fun to do.

The student box had better be able to handle the voltage the instructor box provides or you could likely have a burned out box. The student box needs to get power from somewhere or the sticks wont work.

OK since you just have to make a point here, first let me ask, do you own a 12Z?
if you do then you know that the 12Z is 7.4 volts..........what 9C futaba box or any other box in Futabas line uses less voltage?
see, there is no issue here........you have it wrong, so just get over it already.

No I do not own a 12z.
My comment is simply that the student box has to be able to use the voltage provided to it.
You would be very foolish to not check to see that it can.
Goodbye

and that's a very good point.
thing is, the 12Z manual spells out what Tx's work with it in trainer mode..........to use anything other than the ones specified is probably asking for trouble and voiding the warranty.

It also mentions if you use the 12FG that you DO need a special cable. This from Tower:

"This cord uses voltage drop circuitry required for the 12FG. This
will NOT work, nor can it be modified to work with any other
radio systems."
