I was on the ServoCity web site Looking at the Futaba R148DF
what i noticed was that Futaba crystals cost 10.00 more than Hitec aircraft . 7.95 as opposed to 17.95

any idea why?

Does Futaba make crystls that much better for this equipment.

Just wondering

The reason is that they can get away with charging more.
There's probably a couple dozen companies around the world that make (assemble) crystals, and even less that grow the crystals. Hitec, Futaba, Airtronics, ect aren't in the game.

Does Futaba get theirs from a supplier/manufacturer who meets tighter standards to charge more?..... Who knows.

This is the reason all of my receivers are Hitec, except the one that came with my initial radio system purchase.

As an added bonus, you're not limited to High or Low band then. Futaba is the only manufacturer that designs it's recievers for for one half of the 72Mhz band or the other.

My recievers are all either Hitec, or the new synthesized Seeker II from Polk's Hobbies.

JR tags their RX's as high and low band as well. At least, they used to. I have three JR's at home all tagged as either high or low band.

I was recently checking on this, and JR now tunes their receivers for the center of the entire band.

JR no longer splits receiver tuning into high band/low band. They stopped doing this 10-12 years ago. You can change out JR receiver crystals without problems or changes in performance. Of course transmitter frequency canges should only be made by Authorzed radio shops, like Horizon.

That's good to know the next time I'm looking for an RX. I know I've run into situations where I wanted a low band and the LHS had to order one.

Default Can we make a difference

Does any body think if enough of us ask Futaba to change to center tune RX they might do it?

Does any body know why they offer hi and low anyway is it more stable or something?

Futaba don't make their own xtals. The buy them from JCL Japan. Previously they bought them from Koyo Japan.

JR crystals are better than they used to be, and the receiver designs have improved a bit. They tune at the center of the band with a "dead on" high tolerace crystal at the factory.

It is my experiance with JR that the receivers since 1990 or so perform the same throughout the band without retuning as long as the crystal you swap with is close to "dead on" it's freq. Most JR crystals are pretty good now. The middle-dot ones are the best. They are closer to freq.

JR quit the high band / low band 12 years ago or more.

John - Is that 8 years since date of manufacture or date of purchase?

I have asked Danny from JR (click here) to verify that current JR receivers are center tuned (ch35/36)..

As best I can tell, yes. I bought it when I worked at a hobby shop and we ordered it from Horizon the week before I bought it. Unless Horizon was stocking 4+ year old receivers, and I don't think the R600 even existed 12 years ago, they didn't make the switch away from High/Low that long ago.

Here's the response from Danny at JR:

John, sounds like you bought yours JUST before the switch-over

I have a few Koyo crystals if someone would like to swap for a set of something I can use.

I have
1 RX 72.32 (what channel is that?)
1 TX 72.32 ( " )
1 RX 75.47 (64)
1 RX 75.87 (84) This one does NOT say Koyo on it.

Anyone got a good set of green or brown crystals for my TQ3?
