surface vs air radios
What's the difference between surface radios vs air radios. If I want a 4 channel radio for a boat, can I use any 4 channel, or does it have to be surface rated only? I'd like to buy a used one, but all the used ones seem to be for planes.

RE: surface vs air radios
The older radio systems here in the USA used the 72MHz frequency band for air and the 75MHz band for surface. This prevents interference between the two, but in each case you need to do some sort of frequency control so other users cannot cause problems if they have the same channel in that band.
If you go to one of the newer 2.4GHz band radios, you can use them for whatever you want, but if that's not an option then you need to pick up something in the 75MHz band, not the 72MHz air band....

RE: surface vs air radios
You might be able to pick up an 'air' transmitter and have it changed to 75 mhz for surface use.
Futaba only charges $20 to do it and that includes the price of the crystal.

I would imagine the other brands can be changed for a reasonable price.
