It is the spartan AP2000i stabilizer, it allows you to hover hands free for photography and supposedly if you are flying and get into trouble you let go and the unit will stablize into a safe hover.

Sounds good!! I guess it is used for Heli's? That is why I did not recognize what it was. I can see where that would be useful.
I have used Autopilot devices, like the FMA CoPilot, to keep and RC aircraft straight and level, in flight. It tends to fight you when you try to override it, so you need to play with the Gain, depending upon whether you are flying or in landing/takeoff mode. It is one of those tools that may not be useful all the time.
