Looking For More Advanced Radio
Right now, I might be getting a Cap 231, so I was looking at Radios and all the stuff that goes with them. I was looking at the new Futaba 6EXA - $179.99. It is a computer radio and comes with 4 S3004 servos. Now does this come with anything else like a crystal or do i have to buy that to. I came up with a list of stuff that I think i need to buy, but if it comes with the radio please let me know.
A FM receiver - $59.99 - What is the difference between a FM and a PCM receiver?
A FM Crystal - $17.99 - What does dual conversion mean?
Engines - I want to put around a 60 size glow engine - $90.00 to $100.00 on it, but the price is a little high, so would i be able to put a 46 - $61.99 on it and still perform some good 3-D.
I am looking to move up from my trainer, and everyone in my club thinks I should, but I am going to college next year, and this is quite a bit of money. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Matt

The 6EXA from Tower Hobbies for $179 includes a receiver, 4 ball bearing servos (S3004), a switch harness, one servo extension, and both battery packs (Tx & Rx), plus the crystals for whatever channel you order it on. Everything radio related for a standard 4-channel plane.
Acording to Tower's web-site, the Cap 231 requires:
This means the S3004 servos which come with that radio are not strong enough (44.3 oz @4.8V), so if you want that radio, I suggest checking if you can upgrade the servos to something stronger (especialy if you want to 3D). Also, based upon their engine recommendations, a 46 engine not be enough power to fly it, let alone 3D.
If cost is the problem, you can salvage the receiver from your trainer, and just buy servos, but it looks like you'll need more $$ for a larger engine.
Acording to Tower's web-site, the Cap 231 requires:
Engine: 1.20-1.50 (2-stroke) or 1.20-1.50 (4-stroke)
Muffler: Sport or Pitts Style to fit into the cowl.
Radio: 4 Channel w/6 ball bearing servos w/ atleast 65oz of torque
Y-harness: 2 (1-ailerons and 1-elevators)
Servo Extensions 12": 2 (for aileron servos)

For a good discussion of the merits of PCM versus PPM/PWM check out www.torreypinesgulls.org/Radios.htm as they give a pretty factual writeup.

The least engine I would put in that is a .51 or larger. A .46 won't do 3D unless you build it really light. A cheap .46 won't fly it well. You need to get quality stuff if you want to do 3D and have fun with a plane like that. If you want to do 3D on a budget, look more at some of the something extra or something in that ball park that will hang on a good .46. If you spend a bunch on this plane, then skimp on power, you will hate it.

Right now at Tower Hobbies you can get the 6EXA for $179 (as mentioned above)
Minus $15 off for any order over $150 till the end of July.
PLUS they throw in an extra servo on top of the 4 that the radio comes with free for a limited time on any Futaba 4,6,9 channel radio.
So...
$179
-$15
= $164 + the free servo
Seemed like a pretty good deal to me so I ordered one yesterday. Of course if you need the higher output servos your outta luck.

Here is an alternative and a possible solution to your servo power issue: S3004 servos will put out roughly 30% more torque at 57oz when powered by a 6.0v battery instead of the supplied 4.8v.
