Look at the used market. You can get better stuff for not a lot of money. If you go really cheap, you will hate it, and if you decide to stay with it, you will have to replace most of it when you get your second plane. You should be able to find a good used trainer, with engine and radio in that price range that will be good for many years of use and the engine and radio that will last for many planes.

250 is too cheap to get something decent. Even a discounted Zagii kit, which is about as cheap as you'd want to go cost around 300-350. Your only other choice would be to play around with a SPAD (scratch built 'coroplast' planes) But that's NOT something you want to do your first time out.

I absolutely have to disagree with the previous post. SPADS are a great way to start out, as evidenced by many many people. Do not listen to anyone that says otherwise. Go to www.spadtothebone.com and look at the planes there. the debonair and the spadet are both great trainers (although the deb is kinda ugly, it flies QUITE well). you can also visit the spad section of this forum, or go to www.spadworld.net and visit the spad only forums there. SPADS are a great way to save money and still have fun in this hobby. you can buy a lower end radio (like a 4 channel futaba or JR) and a motor (gms or thunder tiger, for example) and have plenty of money left to build several spads.

Hi,
Yes AM radios are legal provided that they are GOLD STICKERED. Many of the older AM radios were wide band and are illegal to use and I do not believe they can legally be converted to narrow band any more. As far as I know ALL FM radios were narrow band so any older FM radio should be good to go.
Many times at RC auctions you can pick up a complete setup for the kind of money that you are talking about. I would strongly recommend that you go with someone who is knowledgable as it is too easy to buy junk if you are not very familiar with RC equipment.
