Default radio/reciever inop

i recently bought a large bi-plane. the plane came with i believe 6 servos. the radio is a 7 channel. plane has 2 battery packs. both i believe are old/bad. there is also 1 switch on either side of the fuesalage. i have hooked up 1 known good battery to one switch. when i flip the switch on, some of the flaps move slightly. when i turn the controller on and move either of the sticks, nothing on the plane happens.

how would i know if the reciever and controller are a matched pair?
how can i test the reciever to check its workings?
can i verify that the remote is good?

any other ideas on what to do or what to look for or what to check.

thanks for any and all help

Best thing would be to find a club near you or a hobby shop and get some help, it will save a lot of typing and trial and error.

Also, get in the habit now, turn on the transmitter first and then the reciever, turn the reciever off first then the transmitter.
