The R148 is smaller and uses end block connectors instead of those annoying top loading connectors as found on the r127 and r138. It's up to you and how much space you have for your installation.

Futaba PCM Receivers 138DP VS 148DP
My flying buddy and I had the same questions about a month ago when he was looking for another RX for his 8 channel. The folks at Tower told him the 148DP is refered to as a micro RX, and uses the latest electronics technology, while the 138DP is the traditional RX. I don't know if I totally believe that, but that is what he said they told him. He ordered the 138DP and it seems to be doing just fine.

I have been inside both of them, and the statement from tower is pretty correct, the 148 uses more smt components, and has an internal voltage regulator, while the 138 does not, and the 148 is quite a bit smaller, and it costs a lot more(148). I have both in service and neither one performs better than the other.
