RE: what was your first radio system?
Berkley Aerotrol transmitter with a Miller single tube receiver built from a article in Model Airlane News Magazine. About 1953-4.

RE: what was your first radio system?
Mine was a Macgregor DigiMac 3, back in the early 70's, had a nice anodised blue case. But it also had 3 sticks and never stopped glitching so I could not use it. Fortunately I managed to return it to the shop I bought it from and bought a brand new OS Cougar 4 channel system on 27 MHz which worked perfectly.

MacGregor DigiMac 1+1 - This had one proportional channel -and- one push button (3 position) channel which worked something like an escapement.

RE: what was your first radio system?
A while ago got into the hobby practically... I was fond of RC for a very long time... Just got my World Models Trainer (Mech I) an OS .46LA, and Hitec Optic 6 Sport (FM) with 4 x 325 servos...
flown quite a few times n it crashed by being out of signal range... now plannin of gettin a new trainer and mount my old n faithful OS which literally starts at half a flick...
it was my earliest hobby investment...

Tower Hobbies 6 channel manufactured by Kraft (1980). Still have it and it still works! Lot's of great memories but those sharp corners where hard on the hands.
Had it converted (gold sticker) around 1986 or 87 before moving to a Futaba FG7K Gold Series.

After flying control line for 20 years, I got into RC with a Kraft Series '73 7 channel single stick system in 1973 and bought a Kraft BiCentenial '76 7 channel single stick in 1976. The Kraft BiCentenial is narrow band and works and flys to this day. Flew Kraft into the '80s when I built an Ace Silver 7 single stick system. Around 1990 I bought a Ace MP8000 single stick with which I am still flying. When 2.4 mhz radios hit the market I bought a Futaba 7C Fasst system with which I learned to fly dual stick. Then this past Christmas I got a Futaba 8FG which I really like.

My first successful one was an Ace kit, both transmitter and receiver, purchased mail order from Ace in Higginsville, Mo. in 1956. A single channel using a tube front end and a transistor amp driving a relay to switch an ESC (escapement, the original definition of ESC) which was powered with a wound up rubber band.

Mine was the Miller receiver. The construction article appeared in the January 1953 issue of Model Airplane News. I was too young to build it, 12, so I had one of my older friends make it for me since he had the experience. He charged me $10. I built the Berkley Bootstraps for it. It was powered by an OK Cub .14. The plane had a rubber band powered Bonner escapement that was sequential. You had no choice of direction, just what ever was coming up next. There was no motor control. The flight stopped when you either crashed, flew away or just ran out of fuel. My friend had a ground based transmitter that weighed several pounds and it was always placed on top of his car for better reception. I don't remember if I ever had any successful flights on it but something good must have happened since I am still at it. I began to have more consistent successes with the Citizen-Ship brand and stuck with that for a while until college stopped everything for a few years. Dan.
