Hitec "Karbonite" servo's
 

Who has used the new karbonite servo's, and how do they really hold up? I am thinking of using them on my 1/3 H9 Sukoi.

I'm planning on using the two that I picked up for throttle only.
I have read one report on RCU of the Karbonite gear snapping off at the spline. I talked with another flyer at the field that said he had one also snap off at the output spline (elevator application, .46 size plane)
For a 1/3 scale, I'd use it for throttle or other non load critical application until it has proven itself.
I also think the resin may be too brittle to withstand shock type loads even though it may be "stronger" than the nylon gears.
I plan to keep my ears and eyes open for other comments as these servos go into the field. Hope to get some more feedback from different applications.

I think that one report was me, I had a Hitec 475HB on my 27% H9 Edge 540's THROTTLE, with absolutely NO BIND and was flying at 1/4 throttle when the servo shaft broke clean off and killed my motor, luckily I got it down safely and replaced the servo with another one, this time I really sat down and tested it. The other one I gave to my friend and he replaced the broken part.

For the 1/3 H9 Sukhoi I would use Hitec 5945 Coreless Digitals for that all around, there awesome servos with tons of power.

Thanks to those who responded. I have decided to go with tried and true JR 8411's.

A shaft on a 475HB broke on my Ucd 60 on a pull pull rudder setup. I thought I had the wires to tight. Thank god it broke while I was in the set up stage.
Now I just don't Know! :confused:

Are 475's the new "karbonite", I thought that was only use one new digital servo so far?

Well, I just looked it up, and the 475 are karbonite. Now I am curious, I have two of the 5975 digitals. I haven't had any problems with them, but this may deserve watching.

Dirk, I had the same problem with my throttle though! Mine broke clean off where the arm grips to the servo, the shaft...

I just put three 5975's in the tail of a Sig Cap. If they snap that would definitely end my already suckn year with a bang. Has Mike at Hitec been alerted of this thread?

I am looking at r/c REPORT and on the back cover is a HitecRCD Advert.
It says the HS-5975HB, HS-5475HB, HS-475HB, HS-325HB, and the HS-322HD are all Karbonite geared.
October 2003 edition.

Hope this helps you guys. Have had Hitec servos strip on me, Futaba seize up, JR go wonky (drive from one end to other full travel). I think it sometimes is just the servo.

I have a 475 on the rudder of my funtana and a 5475 on the elevator, so far no problems. Blenders, snaps, walls etc. so far so good.

Hmmm Karbonite...should be some very durable material as it was apparently used to freeze Han Solo for his trip w/Boba Fett to Jabba the Hutt's little place on Tatooine.
I figure if it was good enough for Han, its good enough for me !

Mike Mayberry from Hitec mentioned in another thread that they had discovered that the screws should extend 2mm farther into the output shaft past the spline on the Karbonite geared servos. Hitec will have some replacement screws available in the near future for those that want to change them out.

The stock screws are 2.6mm x 8mm I believe. If your going looking make sure you do not use anything longer than 10mm. These screws are most likely available in the RC car department at your LHS. All of the imported cars use these range of screws...

I have several of the 5975HB's on throttle in my 40% models, so far no problems.

Hmmm, I have 5 new Hitec 475HBs sitting here for my Topcap. I wonder if they are newer or not, I will just use them and see what happens.

I would go to the hardware store and replace the screws with the longer ones before using them.

I too, had foregotten about Han's experience with Karbonite. Maybee I will learn from his experience and stay away from Karbonite.

I'm dissapointed that someone beat me to the Karbonite joke :(
I ran a 475HB on my Laser 3D's rudder, after countless hours of hovering practice, it's still as good as new.
I have 5475 Digitals in my 25% Sukhoi and have had no problems as of yet.

Maybe Princess Leia snuck into your workshop and hit the buttons that melted your Karbonite??? :PPP

Hi Guys I have 5975s on my ailerons in my 33% sukhoi. Broke the shaft in about 10 flights havn't seen my replacement screws yet for the other 3. I hope the longer screws do the trick. Mark,

Same here. Output shaft broke on a 40 size plane.

Guys with the output shafts braking: were you using the stock servo arms? I am asking because my friend has 5975's (ailerons and elevator) in a beautiful new F86 turbine and Hitec told him just last week if he was using stock Hitec servo arms the 8mm screws were fine.
