Single stick radio
 

Hello,

Are there any *new* single stick radios available in the market for RC Airplanes?

Never have felt home with dual stick ones and miss my old single stick radio...

nothing new but many are using the [link=http://www.mstar2k.com]microstar2000[/link] encoder in their favorite old single-stick case.
if you have a decent donor radio and RF deck then the kit is only $50 or so and not at all difficult to build if you know how to solder and follow directions.

The PIPE here once more...Zagnut is RIGHT about the MicroStar...I've got one myself!

As far as any NEW "knobby" radios (my favorite nickname for single stick radios), well, the ONLY supplier of rudder knobs that I know of, for those who DO want to build their own knobby radios...MARV JENSEN in North Carolina, specifically at http://www.jensenjetmodels.com/id30.htm , has RUN OUT http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/.../geno/rotz.gif of rudder knobs to use for those wishing to make up MicroStar knobby radios...!

So, I'm trying to get information on ONE rudder knob design...the JR Century 7's rudder knob... for a sort of reproduction of it, to take one of the Bourns 3852 "Series 162" potentiometers which have a 3.18mm (1/8th inch) diameter shaft...and the photos graciously provided by someone else who posts here at RCU from time to time (and who ALSO has a JR Century 7 knobby radio) who lives in Texas, of HIS Century 7's rudder knob in a "dissected" form, showing all of the internal parts...as well as the early style Kraft/Heathkit rudder knob I KNOW I've got here at home, somewhere in storage, from my long-ago-dissected first knobby radio, a Heathkit 5 channel knobby unit...will provide me with the basic info I'll need to CAD-design an all new rudder knob, for us knobby fliers to use!

This IS going to take some time to draw it all out, and make up a prototype rudder knob or two from metal for those parts that need to be made from it, and epoxy resin to mold the plastic parts from (as well as silicone rubber molds to make up the plastic parts in the first place)...and I'm hoping that, if all goes well, perhaps someone like Marv Jensen could accept my eventual design for production, in the sort of materials that a knob like the Century 7's old unit was made from.

It IS going to take a while to make up a prototype rudder knob...but SOMEONE has to do it...and I'm willing to take on that endeavor....but it WILL take some time to do it.

Seems like all you really need is the rotational 3rd axis element to adapt to a 2 axis stick. How about the 3 axis controls they have on Desktop Camera Controllers ?, How about the 3 axis controls on a Game Controller ?, What do the steering controls on a RC car radio look like when you take it apart ? Or build it yourself ...looks like basically all you need is 2 flat spots on the shaft and a spring loaded scissors assy for centering on the flat spots. Maybe you can get those out of an old Futaba, etc radio. I would look at taking an old junker which you can pick up for $10 or $15 at a swapmeet and making the two DS assys into one SS assy with a minimum of additional parts .....might be fun to try.
