Digital throttle on throttle?

Hi there!

Is it a good idea to use a digital servo to control the throttle on a gas airplane? I bought a Hitec mini metal-gear digital for this purpose, but I've been reading that the higher level of vibration from a gas engine will cause a digital to burn out. Any thoughts?

No it isn't...they just can't handle the vibration... I use high speed standards

I have been using Hitec digitals on throttle for many years now never a problem all the way to 40% models. I don't suggest the metal geared versions. The Karbonites are my preference or nylon geared precision coreless servos.

Throttle requires precision repeatable results, in precision and 3D flight the throttle servo likely gets as much a work out if not more than other surfaces IMO.

With all due respect, that's hogwash. The vast majority of us that fly giant scale (>25%) airplanes use almost exclusively digital servos as should anyone entrusting an aircraft of this type of investment.

What I received for this purpose is a 5245MG, will that be OK?

The metal gear servo will work fine but as with all metal geared servos the life expectancy is shortened some what due to the shock loads imposed by gassers. Using the servo for throttle is NOT a problem in fact this application is less imposing than buffeting surfaces IMO.

Thanks Mike, I'll push ahead with this servo then. I've used your reccomendations for the remainder of the servos on this bird, 5945s on the ailerons and elevators and a 5955TG on the rudder. Even though it took me about 10 times longer than it normally would using my TX, I used a servo programmer to set everything up too.

Sorry... I was just passing along what QuiQue and Andrew J. passed to me while I build.....

'but hey, what do they know;):D
