Buddy boxing different brands

Is it even possible to buddy box different brands of radios?? For example, I have a friend who has a JR on his trainer. I 'm getting ready to purchase a radio for my plane and was wondering if I got a Futaba or Airtronics if we would be able to buddy box the two of them so that he could teach his boy to fly the trainer using my radio? Seems like a silly question but I just can't seem to come up with the answer on my own. Thanks.

Hi,

but I just can't seem to come up with the answer on my own. Thanks.
Then try google with exactly the following words :
buddy-box different-brands

You surely will find what you're looking for !

But solutions are not always so easy.

I dont know about airtronics but I dont see any way of connecting JR and Futaba. I have both JR and Futaba to do training with. A futaba buddy box doesnt need a battery, JR does. Futaba breaks out the individual signals, JR has a two wire cable. It would take a smart adapter, more trouble than its worth.

Hi,

I have done it with very little difficulty. If you would send me your email address and/or phone number, I'll get the details to you and discuss what is involved.

Take care,

Glynn ..

As a general rule, I believe only Futaba and Hitec will plug directly into each other. As mentioned before, you may be able to modify others to work -

Hi again,

OK, I guess you found my website (also to be found in my signature below).
So when looking at first glance into my website, it's obvious that connecting different brands can be a hassle. It's particulary a hassle when 2 programmable transmitters of a different brand are involved.

So if you still have to buy a transmitter, and you really want to buddy with a specific brand, then buy the same brand. Period.

Horizon-Hobby sells a buddy lead to connect Futaba/Hitec (round-DIN-connector only) as slave to a JR as master (16USD). I tested one without any problem. This lead is NOT reversible. With some soldering to obtain an adaptor-lead, this lead can be used for a Futaba with square connector. Really a pity that this great and cheap product is not (yet) available with the square connector.
