My question is this. Can I use another brand of crystal in a Futaba receiver, assuming of course that it's the same channel?

Maybe, maybe not. Depends what other brand and what type of receiver (single/dual conversion). It's a lot easier and safer to use the correct crystal.

That said, most makes of single conversion crystal seem to be interchangeable.

No, crystal and receiver brands should never be mixed. All the manufacturers warn aginst this, they are cut differently for different brands. Some combos will work but at a probable range loss and some will not work at all.

Hmmm, LHS employee said as long as they are the same channel there should not be a problem. But I didn't think that was right. I will check with Futaba to get the goods, and a crystal.
