the difference is the length of the shaft coming off the end of the crankshaft. SG shafts have the flywheel and all the drive components attached to a singal shaft. a short shaft requires a pilot shaft to mount the the clutch. all race engines all SG shaft cause it is said short shafts don't let a person know it there a slight bend between the flywheel and the pilot shaft which leads to vibration which leads to a loss of power. the bend isn't even noticeable it's so slight but it robs power. unlike SG shafts which is all just bolted to a single shaft not two individiual shafts.

They make the SG shaft so you don't have to mess w/ the pilot shaft type clutch nut. and like B-D said, the SG type runs truer, cuz it's 1 piece. You might need to get an assortment of shims for the clutch and flywheel though, if you get an SG shaft engine and expect to use the same clutch that came off a different style shaft engine...To get everything lined-up properly...

i don't think that would be a good idea cause the center of the shaft is hollowed and threaded to allow the clutch bell screw to be secured. and why would you want to anyway?
