hey fraser
i`m building that kit now.
i`m about half way thru building.
i was hoping the finish this weekend.
but i went x bashing this weekend.
now my x is taking my wrench time.
i need to rebuild my diffs and stocks in my x for next week racing.
so i benched my rs4 18ss for a few days.
so far the rs 4 build is turning out ok. no problems with the build.
i only thing i heard about is the stock tires are garbage.
i heard you will wear out the tires in one day of running.
i was told to get some good foam tires.

i did a few more things
i did away with the pull starter.
i never had any luck with them and went with the roto start.
i`m using a hitec 645 for steering and a hitec 625 for T&B.
i also got a diff fuel tank. the one that comes with the car has a
primer bulb that i heard leaks air. so i got one without the bulb.

the kit has the best directions ever on a kit. It's easy. The car itself is one of the best stocks i've ever driven. BUT BE CAREFULL WHEN BUILDING IT:
1)Dont forget to fill the differentials with silicone oil NOT WITH HEAVY DUTY GREASE AS THE DIRECTIONS SAY! They dont mention it anywhere.
2)In the front differentials gears the manual sais to install a small spring IT DOES WORK dont forget it!!! Dont forget to fill the differentials with 10.000oil if you use rubber tyres and 20000oil if you decide to use foams.Fill them with the same type because the spring makes the front diff harder to spin as it has to be. If you dont put the spring then 20k front 10 rear for rubber and 40k front 10 rear for foams.

NOW YO TELL ME.
i didn`t fill the diffs with oil. only that grease. and i didn`t use that front spring too.
i got an updated page in the manual that says not to use that spring in the front diff.
looks like i`ll be taking it apart even before i do a first start up.

I finished building my kit a couple of weeks ago and have now run 4 tanks through it. The engine's certainly getting stronger each tank. I had already put 30k silicon lube in the diffs because I had some left from my last savage build up (I'm running foam tyres). It's also much easier to build than the savage.

it doesnt say put oil in the diffs, you can though, 10K should be fine but sometimes it will leak out or get inside your bearigns and drag them

oil won't stay in those diffs, there not sealed. HPI does make a spring kit with different strength springs for diff tuning

I didn't fill my diffs like I do with the savage, just put enough on the gears to coat them nicely. The diff lube is very sticky so it shouldn't leak out

DUDES ARE YOU CRAZY??? 1)Theres no leak to my hpi AT ALL!!! NO LEAK!
2)The oil is NOT only for the stiffness of the diff but also for LUBING IT! With the simple grease if you run a full racing day then after every run your diff
gears will turn red from overheat (over 100 celcium degrees)!!!!!!!!!Silicone has much much more heating capacity than heavy duty grease!!!!!!
3)NO SILICONE OIL = MELTING GEARS AND PLASTICS EARLIER THAN A YEAR OF USE!!!

i usually just run grease, but yes you can run some light silicone oil in there, shock oil would prolly even work, i tried 60k diff lube, way too thick, so stick with like 10k or 20k at the most, and no the gears wont turn red, it would take a serious amount of force, and rpms to turn the gears red, not to mention the plastic near it would start to melt

The plastic is teflon based polymer-plastic. It burns only in flame and doesnt melt as easy as you think. Let me inform you that i have destroyed once a front diff of an rs4 2. The reason is that if you dont refill with grease, the remaining grease (after 2-3 or 4 months of use) will turn from thick liquid to solid. Then into pieces and finally useless dust at the diff's bottom which also means no lubrication to the gears which means iron-dust and sometimes at full speed cornering overheat. Man i dont speak just to say something...everything i write has the apropriate knowledge BASE. I dont know what made you think i'm some kind of wss or something...

hey guys
ok i finished building the kit. the only thing left is paint the body.
break in this weekend.
i was setting up the radio last night. adjusting the linkage etc.
i noticed the chassis flex when i hit the brakes. lifting the back of the chassis up.
its like its fighting the servo saver. i have the linkage adjusted good.
not binding the servo and anything like that.
anybody else see this?

I'm building my 18ss kit now and I put the heavy grease that came with the kit in the differentials, that's want the directions tell you.
Why was the large metal gear in the differentials have teeth on both sides when the directions only show one side with teeth?

Could it be two gears stuck together with a little grease? Or with some kind of shaft joining them?

These are the directions. If you go to step 10 and look at the big metal gear 86329b - It shows only one side with teeth? Mine has teeth on both sides?
Which is correct or am I reading this wrong?

That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard, it must be 2 stuck together somehow. Do you have another one in the box (the one for the other diff)? If not, there's your answer. Stick a sharpie in between them.

Not stuck together, they were both like that.

Is that a question or a statement?

Look, there are two differential spurs in there, one for the front dif, one for the rear diff. They both SHOULD look like the part does in the manual. Therefore, if you can't find even one that looks like the one in the manual, then the one in your hand must be both of them stuck together somehow. You get me?

Ah, ok. That is DEFINITELY the weirdest thing I've ever heard. Hasn't anyone else around here built one of these to help this guy out? Where's my man GYNAIKAS when you need him...

Maybe it's an updated part and there's no addendum for it in the manual, I don't know, it's mighty strange. Does it actually prevent you from continuing the build? Try using them, if eventually they don't fit under the diff covers, then head back to wherever you bought it or order spares. http://www.hpieurope.com/options.php...n&partNo=10256
