Default Engine for my RS4

I was wondering what is the stock engine in my rs4 s 18ss compared to. I'm interested in getting a good engine for it and i want to get more power. I dont want to spend a whole lot of money, though. (kinda narrows things, huh)Anyway, any input is appreciated!!!

Your engine produces 1.52hp. With a tuned pipe and exaust (and with HPI racing filter) you gain about 0.2hp minimum. so prduces about 1.7hp. I would change my engine only for OS .18 tz (2.2hp) but i also think 2.2 is more than i need for bashing or even racing. Simply dont change the engine cause basicly it is an LRP .18 given to HPI. And as I always say LRP makes the most durable engines I've ever tested.

I really insist on keeping the nitro star 18ss (1.52hp). It's more powerfull than OS .18 CV-rx (1.35hp) but OS has a bit more torgue at low rpm and a better coolin head. LRP .18 (1.58) is practicly the same engine as nitro star 18ss..! So why replace it??? Get a competition exaust system, a racing filter and a better cooling head and you'll have more than needed.

.18 os tz or mod the 18ss

I'd mod the 18ss - buy a spare piston/sleeve assy and go at your current one w/ a dremel. There are threads in the engine forum on what to do

I agree 100%! I prefer mods...tz is just too powerfull...no need for 2.2hp at any track...but for drag...

Here's my problem. The engine just don't seem to get up to higher rpms. It runs like i have the throttle half open. But, this could just be my perception of a smaller motor. i'm used to a revo 3.3. i know its not terribly larger but it just seems like its lagging. i tune it and it gets better, but it still don't sound right. also, its either stuck in 2nd or not shifting out of 1st gear. i have taken the trans. apart and cleaned it up and i will run it friday to see if that was the problem.

Just adjust the set point adjustment. Thead lock in not required (not bad if you use some though) cause the tense of the spring prevents it to synchronize with the engine's vibrations and get loose. Just set up the high speed needle properly to have smooth full throttle. Then readjust the low speed needle. If you open the h.speed needle close a bit the low speed one, if closing the h.speed needle open a bit the low speed needle. When you find te right tuning, adjust your idle by turning the small black screw that opens/closes the carb barrel and the engine's ready.
