Thought I'd drop in and contribute to this long-running thread. I must admit that I haven't run my car in something like a year, I've been so busy with class and everything...

The good old OS .18 cranked up like a champ, and things were looking pretty good until I thought I lost my clutch. Tore everything apart to find the clutch in fine shape, I'll let you guys figure out what went wrong by the pictures. At least this is a cheaper fix! Motor mount screws were loose, definitely not a good thing by any measure.

I have to wait a week or so for the replacement parts I need from Tower, so I took the opportunity this weekend to tear everything down for cleaning. My mechanical engineering courses are finally giving me the opportunity to really ENGINEER stuff, so I decided to trace out the stock chassis and model it in SolidWorks. I'm new to the program, so I did this to (1) gain practice for a part I actually find interesting, and (2) to potentially take this model to the waterjet and fabricate myself a custom chassis. I'm thinking 3 mm 7075 aluminum (based on HPI's own super chassis they offer), but I'm not sure that I have access to the waterjet. I've also heard that MIT isn't wild about people using their expensive machines for personal purposes. We'll see if I can make this happen in the coming weeks.

Until then, I've got loads of work demanding my attention and it's supposed to snow 6 to 12 inches tomorrow... []

I used the very advanced "hold it down and trace it" technique.

Tools of the trade.

The sketch with some measurements. Amazing how many dimensions there are for something flat and so simple!

I think the SolidWorks model came out pretty well for a first attempt.

Cleaned, waiting to go back together.

Metal pinion gears > plastic spur gears.

Rather nasty surprise I found while cleaning.

I have just recently purchased the rtr rs4 3, is anyone else having probs with interference with radio gear??

Well thats what i thought it was until tonight i ran the car and gave the TX a few taps and i can see on my failsafe it goes to danger when i tap it, so im thinking loose batteries or something?

So anyone else noticed this with their controls?

Never had that problem. Some failsafes have multiple settings. If yours does try resetting. What kind of batteries are you using? If your usuing a rechargeable pack you may have a back pack that isn't holding enough charge and any draw triggers the failsafe.

It mostly comes down to driving. Mine is mostly stock with a Fantom FR15 which revs alot better than the stock engine. There are a couple guys with NT1's that I can beat at the track because I'm a better driver. The guy who wins all the time actually drives a Tamiya TG10. He has a couple cars and wins with any of them because hes the best driver. Take the car out and practice, practice, practice.

Bought some Losi XXXs shocks on ebay for $10.50! Goig to install them today. They arent threaded. But they are alluminum and seem to be better builtthan the stock ones. They have the clamp style adjustable perch so it will be easier to tune them than carrying around spacers.

my rs4 evo +3 is being so troublesome. today i was trying to get it to run and it wouldn't start. then finally i got it to start but it runs very loud and sounds "heavy". when i accelerate the car, it just speeds up and dosent respond but all the batteries are cool. i tested the steering and throttle/brake its all good. if i give it some gas, it dies down and a click sound comes from the car as it shuts off. the glow plug is a hot one because its 1celcius outside. should i buy a temperature gun to try and adjust it correctly? were should i get a temp gun? do they sell them at cdn tire?

Hey guys I have the rs4 3 ss with the .12r and the 2 speed. This thing seems to have so much power that the rear end spins out when heavy on the gas. How do u guys keep the rear end hooked up to the road.

Is this a new issue with the car (has it run well in the past), or is this a pretty new car? It sounds like it might need a solid retune. In what way does it not respond when it speeds up? It sounds like it might be running very rich. If you're bogging down off the line and not going very fast, try leaning out your high speed needle 1/8 turn at a time. Warm the car up, get it running around, then screw the high speed needle 1/8 turn in (clockwise). You should notice improved pickup and top end immediately. Make sure that you've still got a nice plume of blue smoke at full throttle, and continue leaning it out until the amount of smoke diminishes and performance no longer increases. Richen it up a little bit to be on the safe side and you should be in good shape.

A temperature gun is a very wise investment; I incorporate my infrared unit into the tuning process I just described to make sure it's running in a safe range. I try to stay below 220 degrees F. If tuning isn't your problem, I'm not sure it sounds radio related if you can't get a response from the car once it gets rolling...

On a personal note, I just took out my RS4 for the first time in ages and it ran beautifully! It felt great to get out and smell the nitromethane again. In usual fashion, I attracted a crowd of kids who decided to ride their bikes through my parking lot while I was running... irritating. Didn't stop me from having fun though.

thanks! im gonna try that right now. i think i managed to get the car to run stable like without jumping randomly with speed. but it is so temperamental like if i touch the trigger the car bogs and dies. ***? what should i do about that? same problem? high speed needle? low speed needle? idle? it looks like it is making the perfect amount of smoke(i don't have a temp gun)

Guys I need some help with ID ing these cars. I now they are RS4's but I just dont know which one. They are both identical. I got them off some guy that was going to toss them in the garbage. I would like to rebuild them and also need help on where I can get parts and what OS motors will fit. I only posted pics of one. The other is in slightly worse shape. Also I have been into Nitro ST's for a long time 15 yrs to be exsact but never had a road car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hard for my old eyes to tell from the size pictures you posted but, my guess it is an RS4-2. Maybe some larger pictures might help. It looks like there have been some modifications like the rubber front bumper the motor and the exhaust. If it is the RS4-2 I just finished rebuilding one and parts are easy to fine on EBay and from HPI

Quietnas1 you might want to check this link and see if the car you have matches the HPI manual.

Yes yes yes that's it phoenex1. Thank you so very much. Now I can get to rebuilding these 2 cars. What are good engine options for them?

Glad I could helpI used the HPI Nitro Star T-15 engine with pull start and then converted it to roto start. Nice little motor -Easy break-in and runs great with an HPI Tuned pipe. I played with a few other motors but the T-15 bolted right up to the chassis. None of the other motors I tried fit very well without a bunch of modifications. I'll try and take some pictures later today and post them so you can see what I did with mine -Yours is brand new compared to the one I started with.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to this on road thing. I have been doing stadium trucks for almost 15 years and always wanted a road car. Now I got 2 and can't wait to get my hands dirty on these things.

Let me know if you have trouble with part numbers I kept some of them daaaa should have kept them all-LOL. The photo's are of the RS4-2 almost completed with an almost ready for paint body and the last 2 are of another project that's almost done.
